Barrington Primary School

Welcome to our School!

This website is intended to provide parents/carers and prospective parents/carers with useful information about our school and how it works.

This website provides information on the school, its aims, curriculum and activities.

Confidence in a school comes from knowing and understanding what is happening within it. We hope you will extend that knowledge through contact and discussion with members of staff and myself and take advantage of these occasions for consultation. It is important that mutual understanding and trust should be the basis of shared responsibility.

SCHOOL AIMS, ETHOS & VALUES

At Barrington School we aim:

To maintain a happy, caring environment in which children feel secure to grow and develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, culturally, spiritually and physically to their full potential.
To use the resources available to provide the best possible educational opportunities for the children in our care.
To provide a broad and well taught curriculum where children have many wide and varied experiences.
To continue to work in partnership with parents.
To give children opportunities to develop independence and the responsible attitudes that will enable them to become active and caring members of the community.

In order to achieve these aims, we hope to create a friendly atmosphere, taking special care to establish a happy relationship with children when they first come to school. We encourage the children to have a caring and responsible attitude towards one another and a respect for property belonging to other individuals and the community. Children should feel part of the school, not just the class, meet teachers from other classes and feel that they have an important contribution to make to the whole school.

We aim to instil a respect for the environment in which we live as well as a sensible attitude towards health and safety.

Knowing children are naturally inquisitive, we aim to use this to guide the children to discover much for themselves, thus laying a foundation for independent learning.

Our school motto “from little acorns mighty oak trees grow” reflects the firm foundations we believe we give the children in the early years at Barrington.

We want children to develop self-awareness, improve on their own standards and strive to achieve the best work in all fields of which they are capable. Our mission statement is “we strive for excellence” which reflects this aim.

CLASSES

Booster Classes:

Booster classes in Numeracy and Literacy take place for Year 6 on Tuesday morning and Year 5 on Wednesday morning. On these mornings, the class is split into three small groups, to enable each group to work at their ability level. Each of the groups is taught by a teacher, and there is also a teaching assistant providing additional support.

booster classes
Mr Netscher plans and runs the booster sessions, supported by the class teacher and Mrs Finch Special Needs Coordinator.

The sessions begin with mental maths cards, or a tables test. The class then divides and each small group receives intensive teaching in maths. Because the groups are small, the teachers are able to target the teaching and ensure that all children in the group understand.

After break, the focus shifts to Literacy. Year 6 practise comprehension exercises and refine their writing. Year 5 spend a short while listening to an extract from a class book and then use what has been read, to practise a variety of Literacy skills.

TRANSITION – Year 6 to Year 7

Moving from Year 6 to Year 7 can prove to be a traumatic experience for children. It might even be the first ‘upheaval’ they have had to make since starting school.

Here at Barrington we try to make this as smooth as possible as we can.

We have very strong links with Welling Secondary School and St Michaels Primary School to try and alleviate some of this pressure.

Firstly, early in the Spring Term, teachers from the Science Department at Welling Secondary School come to Barrington for an afternoon to meet our Year 6. They organise mini workshops for the children to support understanding of concepts that have been taught during their time at Barrington. This is a perfect opportunity for Year 6 to meet new teachers.

In the Summer term we always have a morning where either St Michaels’ Year 6 children come to our school or our Year 6 go to theirs.

The children spend the morning carrying out various activities so that they can get to know other children who, not only may be going to the same secondary school as themselves but may also have the same worries about moving to secondary school.

A few weeks later, children from both primary schools meet at Welling Secondary School to spend the whole day experiencing life at secondary school. The children from both schools are mixed together and usually split into between 5 and 6 groups.

During the day children experience the difference of life in a secondary school.

For example, remembering to take all their belongings with them as they move from one classroom to another. Lunch is in the canteen so that children experience being independent and responsible for purchasing their dinner. The have a visit to the library and are taught the skills needed to carry out research in such a large space with so many books.

The highlight of the day for most children is using the Science labs, especially the use of Bunsen Burners!!!

UNIFORM

At Barrington we believe that uniform is an important part of being a member of the school community and we place a great deal of emphasis upon how smartly dressed our pupils are. Our uniform has been selected to be both smart and practical and to give children a clear identity and sense of belonging. Our traditional uniform does not change with fashion trends nor is it compromised by children wearing jumpers around their waists, wearing trainers instead of shoes etc. Barrington is a school to be proud of and we reflect this in the appearance of all pupils.

The school uniform is a bottle green sweatshirt/pullover/cardigan with the school emblem, white school shirt or polo shirt (with or without the school emblem), grey skirt or trousers, or grey pinafore dress, white, bottle green or grey socks/tights.

Please note: socks should be either ankle or knee length socks. We do not allow either trainer socks, “pop” socks or long socks that go above the knee. School trousers should be of a traditional styling i.e. not cargo pants etc.

All children require a waterproof coat in inclement or changeable weather – these should be of light coloured material to aid visibility when walking to school. Please note Ponchos, Shawls/Pashminas and other wrap style clothing is not suitable for Health and Safety reasons.

Summer uniform consists of a white polo shirt (with or without the school emblem), short or long grey trousers or green gingham dress, green baseball cap.

All children are required to have a separate PE kit consisting of bottle green shorts, white tee-shirt (with or without the school emblem). From Year 1, children are required to have a bottle green track suit for winter sports.
