Thomas Bensted, after being spotted as having potential and being recruited to run with the Track Speed team, run by National Sprint Coach John Powell, has been invited to go on a pre-season training camp to America where he will get the opportunity to train alongside and under the guidance of some of the leading coaches in the world. His current personal best time for the 100m is 11.49 sec and in one European competition he beat the American no 1 in his age group.
Tom competed at the National Championships in July winning the 400 metres in 51 seconds.
Young Enterprise Company Programme 2006/7
A group of 16 6 th form students made up of the A Level and Applied Business students have joined together to start-up and run their own company. The company name is called Magico! which is Italian for ‘Charming’.
Magico! produce and sell bags to the general public made from recycled materials. They have been trading for about 4 weeks and have their first major pitch at the PFA Ladies Night.
Eventually in the new year Magico! will attend a trade fair which is held in the Bexleyheath Broadway precinct. It is here where all of the schools in the borough will show off their company and products which go on sale to the general public.
Magico! have recently had the opportunity to attend a Speed Networking Conference on the London Eye where they had the chance to talk to other achievers that are participating in the YE Company Programme from all over London.
Finally, Magico! will attend a presentation evening which is held at the Marriott Hotel at the end of March where they will present their company to a panel of judges and all of the other schools in the borough. There are seven trophies to be won at this evening and the overall winner gets the opportunity to go into the next round which is the London finals.
As a result of participating in the YE Company programme, the students achieve 2 qualifications equivalent to two GCSE’s (A-C) grade and gain invaluable experience of running a real life business.
Congratulations to Year 12 Young Enterprise Company Magico! for winning the Best Environmentally Friendly Company Award at Monday night’s presentation evening held at the Marriott hotel.
Led by managing director Leo Tsang, and in front of five other schools in the borough, they gave an excellent presentation of their business interests. They were up against eight other companies. It was a highly competitive evening with all companies setting very professional standards. It has been a very successful year for the achievers whose hard work and determination finally paid off. Our thanks go to Graham Willett our voluntary Business Adviser for guiding the achievers through their experience and everyone that has supported the group since September. A lot of time and effort goes into running this programme and to come away with an award is a great achievement. Well done again to the achievers; we look forward to running the programme again next year.
Enterprise in the Classroom
All Year 10 students were introduced to the concept of Enterprise education by a drama presentation and workshop presented by CragRats Theatre Company.
Following on from this, and to recognise National Enterprise Week, 120 Year 10 students took part in a ‘Pyramid Game’ during their Maths lessons. The game incorporated both Maths solutions and enterprise skills to solve a problem. |
