At Chatham Grammar School for Girls we currently have 240 students in our Sixth Form, 105 girls and 22 males in Year 12 and 92 girls and 21 males in Year 13. This uneven balance between male and female students arises as some 80% of our own Year 11 girls continue into our Sixth Form.
All Year 12 students are expected to study four AS subjects, and the majority will continue those four through to A-level in Year 13. Some students prefer to drop one subject after AS in order to take a different AS during Year 13, others prefer to take AS Critical Thinking or A-level General Studies as their fourth or fifth subject.
In addition to your four chosen options, your timetable will include a seminar programme and a core programme. For Year 12 students this includes a weekly tutorial session in Key Skills designed to support you in building a portfolio for either Communication or ICT Skills.
The school operates a ten-day timetable with five 60-minute lessons each day, and a typical AS or A-level subject would be taught for ten lessons per cycle, i.e. 5 hours tuition per subject per week. In addition you are expected to spend 5 hours per subject per week doing preparation, research, assignments and self-directed learning in private study time or outside school hours. We therefore strongly recommend that you should not take part-time jobs for more than 8-10 hours per week. We do not take part-time students!
The Sixth Form base is on the first floor of the Stella Shaw Building, which opened in 1999. There is a spacious common room and study rooms for sole use by the Sixth Form, adjacent to the School Library and the Careers Library which of course are open to the whole school. Networked computers are available in both libraries, as well as in computer rooms and other areas of the school. The Sixth Form Common Room has a small kitchen area, and the main school cafeteria is on the second floor directly above the Common Room.
Entering the Sixth Form is like embarking on a new chapter in your life. How you write that chapter depends very much on your commitment, attitude, and willingness to exploit the many opportunities you are offered. For the majority of you, the Sixth Form chapter is an important transition between being a pupil in compulsory secondary education, to becoming a confident young adult at university – over 90% of our Sixth Form students progress to university or other higher education.
