CURRICULUM

Pupils are tested on arrival. The information the school gains from this and from assessment in lessons is used to monitor closely their progress. All National Curriculum requirements are met and all pupils take a broad, balanced and relevant combination of subjects.

Some subjects are taught in ability sets, others are mixed ability.  Year 9 pupils are well supported as they move towards GCSE courses. The school offers information evenings for parents and pupils at which they can learn about the courses on offer, each pupil’s suitability for them and the study skills necessary for success. Throughout the curriculum there is an emphasis on key skills such as Information Technology.

Key Stage 3 : Years 7-9

The school offers a broad, balanced, relevant curriculum. The core subjects within the National Curriculum include English, Mathematics and Science.

The foundation subjects within the National Curriculum include Art & Design, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Information Technology, a Modern Foreign Language, Music, Physical Education and Citizenship.

Religious Education is a compulsory subject.

Additional subjects include Drama and a second Modern Foreign Language.

Key Stage 4: Years 10-11

All pupils follow a core curriculum. They study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Double Certificate Science, Information Technology, Physical Education, Religious Education and Citizenship. Pupils then choose subjects from a wide range of other academic and vocational qualifications. This gives balance to the curriculum whilst allowing the opportunity for pupils to develop individual aptitudes and interests. All pupils are encouraged to choose a Design & Technology subject and a Modern Foreign Language.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

These are an important part of the development of the “whole” person. The school encourages participation in a range of clubs and activities. Pupils are kept well informed and are invited to join a wide variety of activities. They can be involved in the School Council, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme or many others.

Sports teams are well supported, and are very successful at borough and county level;  musical groups and choirs are enthusiastic and thriving. Pupils are encouraged to develop their language skills at home and in Europe; activity residentials and cultural visits also take place, either at home or abroad.

There are regular journeys abroad, often for skiing, water sports or activity holidays and many pupils participate in these each year.

Many courses offer the opportunity of taking part in field trips and educational visits to places of interest both in the area and further afield. There are regular visits to the theatre, often to current West End shows and to sporting and artistic venues.

UNIFORM

All pupils in Years 7 – 11 are expected to wear their uniform in a way which brings credit to the school and themselves. It is enforced strictly at school and we look for strong parental support in this matter.

SIXTH FORM

Large numbers of students join the Sixth Form. The school has high expectations of its students, encouraging their self-expression and demanding a sense of corporate responsibility. They are involved in the life of the school in many ways, for example, helping teachers with younger pupils and showing visitors around. The school constantly receives praise for their maturity, intelligence and enthusiasm.

The team of Senior Prefects is active in the Sixth Form and throughout the school, carrying out regular duties and helping to organise charity and sporting events.

All students can become involved in drama and musical productions and a variety of other activities, including work shadowing and community service. The many who go on to higher education are able to present fully-rounded applications to the universities and colleges of their choice, and all are helped to develop further so that they can play their part in an increasingly complex world. The Sixth Form has its own common room with facilities for study and recreation.
