| Dorton House School
 Dorton House School is a Non-maintained Special School , part of the Royal London Society for the Blind and located in Seal near Sevenoaks in Kent . The full National Curriculum is taught at Key Stages 1-4, for children whose Statement of Special Educational Needs indicates that a placement in a specialist school for children who are visually impaired is appropriate. As well as meeting the needs of academically able children, we also specialise in supporting pupils with learning disabilities and additional needs.
At Dorton House School , we believe that every child has the right to a happy and secure childhood and the right to a high quality education. Securing the best education for your child is one of the most fundamental desires a parent has. For parents of a child who has a serious visual impairment, causing partial sight or blindness, access to appropriate education is essential. High quality teaching and resources are of paramount importance if your child is to realise his or her full potential and have the same opportunities as their sighted peers.
Dorton House School provides specialist education for children who are blind or partially sighted. Children are encouraged to develop not only the necessary academic skills but also skills for independent living to empower them to live within a sighted world. The values that underpin the design, organisation and management of the Curriculum are as follows:-

- Continuity Planned programmes of transition through the four key stages of the National Curriculum, based on assessment strategies, that reveal children's true potential.
- Partnership Based on a fundamental commitment to enter into active dialogue with the child, their parents/guardians and other key stakeholders to determine and respond to their needs.
- Progression Based on designing programmes that are systematically planned to develop rather than duplicate a child's experience.
- Quality Considerable emphasis is given to the design and effectiveness of children's Individual Education Plans.
Since 1954 Dorton House School has been a centre of education and learning for blind and partially sighted children. We are committed to the most progressive approaches to the education of visually impaired children. The staff team has developed a school that seeks partnership and collaboration with their colleagues in mainstream to develop an effective model of truly inclusive education. We do this by meeting individual needs and giving pupils the necessary skills to take a full part in learning, social and leisure activities, at school and in their local area. We use our specialist staff resources and facilities to enable children who are based in mainstream to benefit from holiday and weekend activities designed to increase their learning, independence and social skills. We are a regional resource and offer training advice and support blind and partially sighted children.
The RLSB and Dorton House run training courses such as the Certificate in Visual Impairment Studies.
If you are a parent and thinking of applying for a place at Dorton House School , you will need to work in partnership with your Local Education Authority. We will provide you as parents, and Local Education Authorities, with:
- Accurate information through our prospectus and information leaflets on all elements of a child's programme.
- The opportunity of an impartial, supportive and confidential assessment with members of our multi-disciplinary Educational Assessment Team.
- Acknowledgement of all enquiries and applications from parents and Local Education Authorities within five working days.
- A thorough assessment for all applicants for short of fixed-term placements at Dorton House School .
- Accurate information before a child enrols at Dorton House School on fees and costs of any programme.

Dorton College of Further Education is part of the Royal London Society for the Blind which has been providing education and training for people who are blind or partially sighted since 1838.
Dorton College is much more than a college of Further Education. We provide a complete educational experience for students who are blind or partially sighted and even attract students from countries worldwide including the USA and Thailand.

| Pre-School Nursery.
The RLSB's pre-school nursery (Dorton House Nursery) caters for children aged between 2 and 5 years old, who are blind or partially sighted and may also have additional difficulties.
The Dorton House Nursery is based in the Brian Johnston Centre, a purpose built self-contained unit on the Dorton campus.
The main ethos of Dorton House Nursery is based on early intervention through assessment of an individual child's needs. The Nursery works towards the Early Learning Goals and offers a rich curriculum that caters for a range of needs and includes:
- Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy for children with additional needs.
- Aromatherapy massage to assist with general relaxation.
- Mobility skills for all ages and at all stages of development.
- Skills for independent living during meal times and refreshment breaks.
- Individual and small group work to aid early learning, communication skills and confidence.
- Swimming in a specially built hydrotherapy pool.
- Weekly environmental outings within the local community.
- Dark and light sensory rooms for visual stimulation and assessment of vision.
Our Nursery aims to be as flexible as possible in meeting the needs of each blind or partially sighted child. Some children come to the Nursery as a split placement, attending a mainstream or other specialist Nursery for part of the week.
We strive to develop good links between  our specialist provision and the mainstream nurseries and aim to ensure that communication between the two aids the development of the child.
A child's statement of Special Educational Needs is usually prepared during his or her stay in our Nursery. During this process, wherever possible, we encourage other professionals supporting the child to visit to observe and discuss progress.
Drop in Days
Drop-in Days are held each Tuesday from 10.00am to 2.00pm , during term time, in the Brian Johnston Centre (Pre-School Nursery). Parents of children who are blind or partially sighted can drop in to work and play with their children under the guidance of Nursery staff. Parents of older children with a visual impairment are also welcome, as are specialist professionals who work with the children. Each week we plan a different main activity such as cooking or swimming. Parents are welcome to join in if they wish or to use the well equipped Nursery playrooms. There is a chance to meet and work with our Physiotherapist and aromatherapy masseuse who specialises in baby massage and baby yoga. | We want you to enjoy your stay at Dorton, and offer a full and varied programme of leisure activities. The campus has an indoor swimming pool, multi-gym, assault course, football pitch and running track, which are regularly used by many of our students.
Your leisure time is yours to use as you choose; to socialise, join the Student Union or take up one of the many available activities - all are designed to ensure you meet people and enjoy the social side of Dorton College. Activities include horse-riding, bowling, the College Five-a-side Football Team, parachute jumps, archery, target shooting and kurling.
As well as European students, Dorton College attracts students from countries worldwide, including USA and Thailand
We have developed strong links with international learning organisations and we encourage students to take part in exchange programmes with countries including Canada , Italy , Spain and Finland .
These have been a big success with our students to date. As well as making international friends, Dorton students have returned with a real appreciation of cultural differences.
