Message from the Head teacher

Welcome to Shears Green Community Infant School web site. My name is Mrs Sue Walker. I am in my sixth year as Head teacher of Shears Green Infant School in Gravesend Kent. I was previously a Head teacher in Bexley, Kent at a smaller Infant School. As a class teacher and deputy head I have worked in Bexley and Gravesham schools and for 3 years at a school on an army base in Germany. I am proud to be the Head teacher of Shears Green Infant School.

Main school entrance

We have a family-friendly school, where each child is valued. We have high standards of behaviour and offer the very best start to a child's education. Our school is totally inclusive and takes children from a wide area of Northfleet and Gravesend. We have a dedicated teaching staff and a high ratio of experienced support staff. We make learning fun and meaningful.

We have very supportive parents and a thriving PTFA, who organise activities for the children throughout the year.

We share our spacious site with Shears Green Junior School and liaise closely with them.

We are fortunate to have a spacious well-maintained building. We have two halls, a computer suite, a care suite, 12 large classrooms with wide corridors, a large entrance hall, library area, a dedicated SEN room and spaces suitable for group work.

We believe that the quality of the school environment is very important and we work hard to maintain our building and grounds. We have a large playground, covered outdoor play area and a large field. We have also planted an environmental garden to further enhance our site.

Our school has strong perimeter fencing and strict entrance procedures to keep our children and our school secure. We have recently had extensive roofing completed and many windows and doors replaced.

Shears Green Infant School has served the local community for over 50 years. You are welcome to register your child for our school at any time. Please just contact the school office with your child's details. When the time comes for you to apply for a place, we will then ensure that you receive application details.

At Shears Green, we have lots to be proud of and nothing to hide. If you would like to visit our school please contact the school office for an appointment. If you have any questions or queries we will do our very best to answer them. We look forward to meeting you and your family in the near future.

Our School

Shears Green Infant School is housed in a pleasant, modern well maintained building, built in 1954 with a generous allowance of space. We have a large playground with markings and a field. We share the site with Shears Green Junior School.

At present leading off the entrance hall, there are three corridors of classrooms, each with it's own cloak room and toilet facilities. We have two new classrooms that have replaced old mobiles and we also have a new care suite.

We have a good range of audio visual equipment, including televisions, video players, DVD players, cameras, interactive whiteboards and a networked computer suite.

We also have a range of musical instruments, including a grand piano, in our main hall.

A covered all weather play area is available for use all year. It has benches and tables, together with activity equipment, surrounded by a soft surface ground material.

We are very proud of our site. We train the children to be sensible with litter and to respect trees, shrubs, and equipment so that they develop an attitude of care and responsibility. We encourage our parents to co-operate with this to ensure the facilities can be enjoyed by future generations.

ADMISSION

Shears Green Infant School provides education for children of the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum Key Stage 1 age - that is 4 to 7 year olds. The Governors of the school admit children in accordance with the Kent County Council primary school admission policy. Children reach statutory school age at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. We currently admit all our children in September but this can change from year to year. It depends on the budget, advice from KCC, accommodation and staffing available to the school each year.

The number of places available at our school is determined by the physical capacity of the building and is called the "standard number". At the moment our standard number is 120.

Parents who want their child to come to us need to complete a Common Application Form (available from either Kent County Council or the school office). This must be returned to KCC or the school by a given date in the Spring Term in the school year before your child is due to start school. Many parents place their child's name on our waiting list very early. We are happy to do this and will then send you the appropriate paperwork nearer the time. School places are allocated in May in accordance with KCC admission criteria, taking into account:

  • Parental wishes
  • Current family association (an older brother or sister already attending this school or the Junior school)
  • Health reasons (for which a medical certificate may be needed)
  • Nearness of the child's home and ease of access to school.

Once KCC has allocated places we will write to you and invite you to a new parents meeting. In the Summer Term we also invite our new children in to meet their new teacher and classmates and to enable them to become familiar with their classroom and the school. We are happy to arrange visits to the school at any time, please contact the school office.

CLASSES

This has to be flexible, since it varies according to the number of children in school and the budget available each year. We conform to statutory requirements to limit our class sizes to 30. The classes are usually arranged according to National Curriculum grouping, that is:

Year R Age 4/5 (Reception/Foundation Stage)
Year 1 Age 5/6
Year 2 Age 6/7

The children normally have a new class teacher each September. Sometimes it is necessary to rearrange the classes at the end of the Reception or Year 1. This ensures balanced age-range classes and helps the teachers with the organisation of the Standard Assessment Tasks required at the end of Key Stage 1. This also helps the children to make a wide circle of friends.

CURRICULUM

Our curriculum is set by the National Curriculum of England & Wales and for the younger children, the Foundation Stage curriculum. The children work on core subjects in English, Mathematics, Science, ICT and Religious Education. Our English and Mathematics teaching is based on the National Strategies for Literacy and Numeracy. Our children also study other subjects - Art & Design, Design & Technology, History, Geography, Physical Education, Music and Personal Social Health Education and Citizenship. Within the school week we expect to spend just over 22 hours in designated teaching time. The time allocation for the subjects is approximately as follows:

graph show curriculum subject percentages of weekly time

You can see the specific details of this timing by looking at your child's class timetable, displayed in the classroom. Many subjects overlap, for example Geography may include ICT work. Obviously Personal Social Health Education & Citizenship (PSHE&C) are part of every aspect of school life. Similarly, planning for the child's spiritual development is integrated into everything we do.

Our aim is to give all our children an equal opportunity to develop their talents, however great or small, to the full. We encourage the children to work steadily, improving a little more each day. We emphasise effort with as much praise as possible. We place great importance on teaching Literacy and Numeracy, as these basic skills are essential to the rest of the curriculum. We ask parents to encourage their children with reading and each child has a home/school reading diary to keep parents and teacher in touch about reading progress. In addition to spending some time on reading regularly at home with your child, we will give other homework as appropriate to the weekly curriculum.

The children in Year R work on the Foundation Stage Curriculum routine working towards Early Learning Goals. These refer to 6 areas of learning

  • Communication,
  • Language and literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Creative Development/Physical Development
  • Knowledge & Understanding of the World
  • Personal Social and Emotional Development.

The school has detailed Programmes of Study for each subject of the National Curriculum. All of these, together with the other documents mentioned above, are displayed in our Entrance Hall.

All Year 2 children have the opportunity to attend a variety of clubs. In the Summer Term Year 2 children have swimming lessons in the Junior school pool once a fortnight. All the children have singing and percussion lessons. The teachers will send you curriculum newsletters each term.

UNIFORM

All the children at Shears Green Infant School wear a uniform right from the beginning. It helps them feel grown up and part of the school. The school colours are royal blue, white and grey and all the items are standard to most of the local chain stores. We do have a stock of second hand items available to parents as well as new items bearing the Shears Green School emblem. Please enquiry at the school office.

SHOES - These should be slip on with elastic or Velcro fastenings - no laces please unless your child can manage these by themselves. Shoes should be sensible for everyday play outside i.e. no trendy trainers, flip-flops or high heels.

PE - All children must change for PE. We ask you to provide a pair of shorts and a T-shirt for your child. Plimsolls should be the black slip-on type not lace up trainers. Your child also needs a named drawstring bag to keep their PE kit in. Please note that for some aspects of PE children work barefoot.

Everything your child wears needs to be marked with her/his name, most especially plimsolls and jumpers. KCC does not accept responsibility for loss or damage to personal property of pupils or staff.
