"The College’s main task is to identify, nurture and develop the academic and personal talents of our students.  The staff are totally committed to providing a first class, disciplined learning environment which both challenges and motivates the students to have very high expectations of themselves and the staff and, therefore, achieve their highest potential.

The College’s success is based on a partnership of commitment between students, parents and staff.  To succeed academically the students are encouraged and guided in developing self discipline, self responsibility and the skills of learning.

This College combines the best of the traditional and the newer approaches to learning.  Teaching group sizes are smaller than most schools and we provide an impressive range of support for students to succeed.

The College is recognised as a Community School, offering an extended day programme outside normal school hours, from 8.00am to 6.00pm.  We are committed to developing and sharing our facilities with the community and local primary schools.  The College has started on a £25 million development plan for the site which will result in new buildings and expanded facilities and opportunities.

The College, which has Specialist School status, works in partnership with the Learning Skills Council, Adult Education, the Youth and Community Service, Swale Borough Council, the voluntary sector, many local businesses and national and county organisations.

We invite you to visit and join our College, which provides a challenging, stimulating and successful learning environment for all our students."

Alan Barham, Headteacher

PROFILE OF THE HEADTEACHER

I have now been a Headteacher for 15 years; 12 years with the Community College and three years at a previous school.

During my career I have taught eight different subjects whilst working in four schools, both in London and in Kent. In terms of management, I have acted as Co-ordinator for Humanities, Head of Geography, Head of Sixth Form and as Deputy Headteacher in two schools. I also enjoyed a two year secondment as Teacher Advisor for Staff Development and In-Service Training.

I have gained a reputation for my innovative approaches for school improvement, approaches to learning and for income generation.

I am committed to developing meaningful and comprehensive links with the community and business. I am equally committed to ensuring that all College students are treated and encouraged as individuals.

As for my home life, I am married, with five children who are all now working. Out of College and education, my interests include keeping fit, music and travel.

CURRICULUM

In addition to the National Curriculum subjects, the College offers a wide range of other courses and learning experiences both within the normal College day, in the Extended College Day, at weekends and during the holidays.  The curriculum is flexible and adapted to match the strengths and needs of individual students.

In Years 7 to 9 all students study the traditional curriculum subjects in addition to their personal and social development through the tutorial programme.  Teaching groups are streamed/set according to ability and the average group size is 22 students.

For students in Years 10 and 11, in addition to English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology students have the opportunity to study a wide range of vocational and traditional subjects, enhancing their potential to achieve high standards.  We expect our students to achieve C grades, or their equivalent, and an increasing number of students are gaining A and A* grades.  The majority of our students now achieve over 10 GCSE passes.

The range of courses on offer include Art, Construction, Dance, Drama, Engineering, Food, French, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, Music, Physical Education, Photography, Sport and Travel and Tourism.

The majority of our students progress into our Centre for Post-16 and Adult Studies at Advanced Level to prepare them for university courses, apprenticeships or good employment with excellent training prospects.

For details of our Post-16 curriculum and courses available please click here for details on our Post 16 and Adult Studues Centre.

A great deal of learning activities, commercial subject learning packages and extension learning material is available on the College website, accessible to students both in the College and at home.  In the near future, parents will be able to access the College website to view students’ academic grades, improvement targets, attendance, punctuality and rewards and sanctions details.

Learning Support Section. The learning support provided includes in-class support by subject specialists and teacher Assistants; withdrawal from the classroom for individual or small group support; and support classes before and after College. Students identified as qualifying for learning support follow an individual Education Plan, a copy of which can be provided for parents.

FACILITIES

The College is very attractively landscaped with mature trees, shrubs and flower borders.  Within the site there are currently over 30 acres of playing fields and 12 tennis/netball courts.  There is also a floodlit multi-play outdoor complex.  Our Sports Centre houses squash courts, two gymnasia and a sports hall and is open until 10.00pm each evening for student and community use.

The College is currently developing new and extended sports facilities, a £1.75m project.

The College’s academic facilities are housed in eight blocks which encompass modern science laboratories; specialist technology workshops; art, drama, music, dance and sound and vision recording studios; a sports conference room; extensive ICT suites equipped with over 600 computers.

In the last three years we have renewed two complete blocks and extensively renovated a further two.  Current plans include vast expansion of the sports facilities and a further four new buildings in the next five years.

In addition, we also have on site a specialist department for deaf students, in which we have enrolled students from all over Kent.  We use the ‘Total Communication Approach’ which has been elected by parents as being the method of education they prefer.  Our deaf students have a greater level of inclusion within the College as the majority of their education takes place in mainstream classes alongside hearing students and staff.

The College prides itself on the quality of facilities for students - over 600 computers, with one computer for every two students; hi-tech digital recording studio; industry standard engineering centre; health and care training centre; and performing arts studios.

All students have free access, at all times, for both IT and Internet use. The College is open from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm every day to students.

A Homework Club and Extended Day activities are also available every morning and evening to students.
