We are a Church of England controlled school admitting children from 5 to 11 years of age. The school is maintained by Kent County Council. Our school is central to the St John's area of Sevenoaks and stands on a site at the corner of Bayham Road and Kennedy Gardens. The site is shared with the St John's Branch Library, which is used by all pupils at the school. The school's accommodation consists of the original Victorian hall and offices with six classrooms added more recently. Facilities include: an assembly hall used for indoor physical education, lunches and drama work, including school productions, and for functions organised by the St John's Association;
an area for music and television viewing adjacent to the hall; a school library; a large activity area; a designated room for Sevenoaks Cluster Schools SEN staff; a computer suite with nine workstations and internet access; at least one computer with printer in each classroom; a small sanctuary room for counselling, small group work and one to one work.
a wild meadow area and a pond for scientific work; an extensive sports area including two playgrounds and a large playing field; use of the swimming pool at nearby Walthamstow Hall.

The children are encouraged to wear school uniform as we believe that it helps to achieve high standards of appearance and to develop a sense of pride in belonging to St John's school. New sweatshirts, T-shirts and book bags are available from Mrs Dye in the office, where you can also purchase swimming hats. A limited stock of good quality seconds is also available.

Children are expected to wear a swimming hat. All PE kit should be named and kept in a named PE bag that can be safely hung in the cloakroom. All children should have an overall, apron or old shirt for art and craft activities. Younger children would benefit from having a waterproof apron which covers the arms. Neither jeans nor T-shirts with slogans or pictures are permitted. The wearing of jewellery is not permitted; simple studs only are allowed and these should be removed during PE for health and safety reasons.

Children in the Reception Year follow the Foundation Stage curriculum. This is divided into six areas of learning:

The school curriculum consists of clearly identified areas of knowledge and experience. These are laid down by the National Curriculum, established by the Reform Act of 1988 for all pupils of compulsory school age in maintained schools in England and Wales.

Documents for all subjects in the National Curriculum have now been published by the Department for Education and Skills. We develop and review policies according to these requirements, making them relevant to St John's.

The curriculum is divided into core and foundation subjects. All subjects are identified as separate areas. At St John’s we also identify as many opportunities as we can to link learning across the curriculum to support the learning and understanding of pupils. The National Curriculum programmes of study are organised by each class teacher for the children in that class taking account of individual needs and levels of achievement.

School visits and excursions are used to reinforce or extend work in many areas of the curriculum. Most of these are made possible by voluntary contributions from parents and supported by contributions from the St John’s Association and our school fund.

 Sex education

Sex education is taught to children in Years 5 and 6. In addition to National Curriculum science, children learn about puberty, menstruation and human reproduction. This is taught in the context of family values and moral responsibility. Further details of what is taught and the resources used are available for parents to see at the beginning of the summer term. A letter will inform parents when sex education will be taught. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from sex education lessons if they wish.

 French

All pupils study the French language. At Key Stage 1 this may involve oral responses to the register as part of the daily routine. By Key Stage 2 there will be a weekly session for French with the oldest pupils recording some of their work in written format. The emphasis is on speaking and listening and we aim to give all children a basic knowledge of the language and an appreciation of the culture of our closest european neighbour. Learning French as a modern foreign language offers real opportunities to use ICT and other subject skills to explore a different modern culture and to make comparisons with their own.
