Welcome !!!

Dyce Academy, which opened in 1980, is a well-established medium sized secondary school with about 500 pupils. The school is situated on the border of Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire and attracts pupils from both the Aberdeen suburb of Dyce and the rural area around Dyce.

It is a truly comprehensive school that is proud of its record for welcoming young people from different backgrounds with a wide range of interests and abilities and providing them with an excellent education.

School Aims

The aims of the school are to provide a wide range of interesting and enjoyable educational activities which will provide pupils with opportunities for the development of :

  • basic skills, both within subject areas and across the curriculum
  • knowledge and understanding
  • particular abilities, talents and interests
  • social skills, including the development of self-respect and consideration of others within a structure which allows for the different needs of individual pupils.

We seek to achieve these aims by:

  • creating a positive working atmosphere in appropriate and pleasant conditions
  • using a variety of learning and teaching approaches within a clearly structured framework
  • drawing on a wide range of resources
  • encouraging pupils to work towards realistic but challenging targets
  • monitoring and recording individual pupil's progress in an appropriate manner
  • giving pupils, where appropriate, some choice in, and responsibility for, their own learning
  • evaluating current school practices on a regular basis
  • providing staff development programmes

We believe that in achieving our aims we will enable young people to develop the confidence, adaptability and skills necessary to take an active and fulfilling role in the world.

FOR PARENTS

HOW CAN I FOLLOW MY CHILDS PROGRESS IN SCHOOL?

Whilst information on pupils' progress is provided at parents' evenings and through written reports, many parents do like to follow their child's progress more closely. This can often be done by looking through jotters and/or workbooks but these do not always provide all of the information which teachers are recording.

In order to answer the question 'How can I follow my child's progress in......?', the following information has been put together for each department in the school.

Art & Design Back to Top

An individual pupil attainment sheet, kept in the department, is used to record grades and comments of staff and pupils at the end of each project. Pupils' sketch books used at home, taken to school regularly, are checked and marked every two weeks.

Business Education Back to Top

Marks and comments are given on both classwork and homework where appropriate. Progress cards giving assessment results are kept in pupils' planners and space is available on these for parents to sign and make comments if necessary.

Computing Studies Back to Top

Marks, and sometimes statements, are given in homework jotters every two weeks. Progress cards giving assessment results are kept in pupils' planners and require a signature from a parent or guardian at various intervals throughout the two-year course.

Design & Technology Back to Top

Pupils are required to take folios and workbooks home throughout the year. These include comments on pupils' work and grades where appropriate.

Drama Back to Top

At the end of each unit grades are awarded for the elements being assessed in that unit. These are available to parents on request.

English Back to Top

The major feedback is in the form of written comments in jotters. All major pieces of assessed work are completed in these, forming a record of pupils' work for the year.

Details on Listening and Talk assessments may also be found at the back of pupils' jotters.

Any National Test results would also be added to the above.

Home Economics Back to Top

Grades and/or teacher comments are recorded in classwork folders and on homework tasks - these are taken home at regular intervals. Profiles completed at the end of each unit of work are available to parents on request.

Mathematics Back to Top

Profile sheets are kept in pupils' folders which contain information on progress through the course and scores obtained on diagnostic or end of topic tests.

Modern Languages Back to Top

Marks are given for pupils' work in jotters. Progress cards giving test scores and grades are kept in pupils' homework planners.

Music Back to Top

Every lesson, pupils keep a diary of what they have achieved in each area. This is then used as a basis for reports. Diaries are kept in the department.

Physical Education Back to Top

In S1/S2 pupils are assessed on the progress made in all activities. The grades are recorded in a sheet which is kept in their planners.

Religious & Moral Education (and Philosophy) Back to Top

Pupils' work can be seen on parents' evenings and is taken home at the end of the session.

In S1/S2 several assessments are undertaken at the end of units. These are kept in pupils' folders and a record kept in the department.

In S3/S4 profile sheets are maintained for Beliefs and Values. Copies of these can be made available to parents on request.

In S Grade Religious Studies and S5/S6 RMPS and Philosophy courses, assessment marks and comments are kept on record sheets in the pupils' folders and in the department.

Science Back to Top

S1/S2 Science - A summary sheet, with total marks for each test and associated level achieved is kept in the planner and updated by pupils.

Standard Science - A record sheet, which is kept in the planner, is updated by pupils. This includes marks for end of topic tests and practical abilities.

Biology - A record sheet in pupils' folder records marks for end of topic tests and practical abilities. Parents can also check jotters and homework.

Chemistry - A record sheet, which includes test and homework marks, is kept in pupils' folders, which are taken home after every lesson.

Physics - A profile of end of unit test results is kept in pupils' folders. Homework marks are recorded in the homework booklets, which are kept in the pupils' folders.

Social Subjects Back to Top

S1/S2 Course - Progress statements are given in daily jotters and grades in homework jotters throughout the course. Homework and formal assessment results are also entered in pupils' planners.

Geography - Progress statements are given in folders throughout the year. A summary sheet of assessment marks is kept up-to-date in planners.

History - Progress statements are given in jotters throughout the year. A summary sheet of assessment marks is kept up-to-date in planners.

Modern Studies - Progress statements are given in jotters throughout the year. A summary sheet of assessment marks is kept up-to-date in planners.

Support for Learning Back to Top

S3/S4 Tutorial pupils will have an information/reporting card inserted in their planner, which will be completed at the appropriate times.

All S5/6 Students taking Higher Still Courses Back to Top

Students in S5/6 taking Higher Still courses have a Student Record of Progress for each subject in their planners. This will record Unit assessments passes/fails. Should any student fail an assessment you will be kept informed by letter from the Principal Teacher of Guidance.
