HOW CAN I FOLLOW MY CHILDS PROGRESS IN SCHOOL?
Whilst information on pupils' progress is provided at parents' evenings and through written reports, many parents do like to follow their child's progress more closely. This can often be done by looking through jotters and/or workbooks but these do not always provide all of the information which teachers are recording.
In order to answer the question 'How can I follow my child's progress in......?', the following information has been put together for each department in the school.
An individual pupil attainment sheet, kept in the department, is used to record grades and comments of staff and pupils at the end of each project. Pupils' sketch books used at home, taken to school regularly, are checked and marked every two weeks.
Marks and comments are given on both classwork and homework where appropriate. Progress cards giving assessment results are kept in pupils' planners and space is available on these for parents to sign and make comments if necessary.
Marks, and sometimes statements, are given in homework jotters every two weeks. Progress cards giving assessment results are kept in pupils' planners and require a signature from a parent or guardian at various intervals throughout the two-year course.
Pupils are required to take folios and workbooks home throughout the year. These include comments on pupils' work and grades where appropriate.
At the end of each unit grades are awarded for the elements being assessed in that unit. These are available to parents on request.
The major feedback is in the form of written comments in jotters. All major pieces of assessed work are completed in these, forming a record of pupils' work for the year.
Details on Listening and Talk assessments may also be found at the back of pupils' jotters.
Any National Test results would also be added to the above.
Grades and/or teacher comments are recorded in classwork folders and on homework tasks - these are taken home at regular intervals. Profiles completed at the end of each unit of work are available to parents on request.
Profile sheets are kept in pupils' folders which contain information on progress through the course and scores obtained on diagnostic or end of topic tests.
Marks are given for pupils' work in jotters. Progress cards giving test scores and grades are kept in pupils' homework planners.
Every lesson, pupils keep a diary of what they have achieved in each area. This is then used as a basis for reports. Diaries are kept in the department.
In S1/S2 pupils are assessed on the progress made in all activities. The grades are recorded in a sheet which is kept in their planners.
Pupils' work can be seen on parents' evenings and is taken home at the end of the session.
In S1/S2 several assessments are undertaken at the end of units. These are kept in pupils' folders and a record kept in the department.
In S3/S4 profile sheets are maintained for Beliefs and Values. Copies of these can be made available to parents on request.
In S Grade Religious Studies and S5/S6 RMPS and Philosophy courses, assessment marks and comments are kept on record sheets in the pupils' folders and in the department.
S1/S2 Science - A summary sheet, with total marks for each test and associated level achieved is kept in the planner and updated by pupils.
Standard Science - A record sheet, which is kept in the planner, is updated by pupils. This includes marks for end of topic tests and practical abilities.
