| The History of Logie Durno School
The school opened in 1874 as 'Pitcaple Public School' and by the end of 1975 there were 100 pupils. Attendance was voluntary. Quite how there was space for them is difficult to imagine! The old Log Book relates that 12 -14 of the pupils had to work on forms, or on slates balanced on their knees. Later, when attendance became compulsory, parents had to request permission for children to be absent to help with the harvest. The playground was just earth at that time. Drinking water had to be brought to the school by two or three pupils from a well at Ferniebrae farm. Two fires provided heating and 4 tons of fuel were needed in winter. Illnesses such as measles, scarlet fever and diptheria were common. In 1913 Medical Examinations were introduced, School Dental Inspections began in 1940. Logie Durno School was extended in 1905. In 1986 the school was modernised, with the provision of indoor toilets, staffroom and headteacher's office. Extra accommodation was provided by the use of Portacabins.
The School Log Book
The present School Log Book was started in 1948 and records that on the 18th February that year a Mr McCurroch from the Public Health Department called to examine all children born in 1938 and 1940. Quite what he found out is not recorded!
