HISTORY

St. Joseph's School had a very humble beginning in the small gardener's cottage at the far end of the grounds under the direction of the Sister's of the Scared Heart who founded the school.

In November 1895 a private Secondary School was founded for day/boarders. St. Joseph's Primary was founded in January 1896. The School entrance gate was on Queen's Lane South. The staff then consisted of a Head Teacher and five student teachers.

In 1970, St. Joseph's was housed in the main building on Queen's Cross - following the leasing of the premises to Aberdeen Education Authority by  the convent of the Sacred Heart. This leasing continues presently.

By the year 1974 the school was firmly established in the main buildings, an amalgamation of four Victorian dwellings discreetly linked and with a gymnasium/hall extension facing northwards onto Queen's Road.

The Sisters retained the first house, linking the school with the hall as their Convent residence and for years a feature of schools life was the walk through the Convent to the school hall for assembly , gym, drama or other hall activity.

In 1993, a new convent was built in the grounds facing Queen's Lane South and the sisters moved out of the main building altogether. The Convent then became the residence of the Bishop.
