Children make a smooth transition from the Reception Class to Key Stage 1.
The broad based curriculum they have already experienced continues and is extended, including the introduction of French by a specialist teacher.
The children’s learning in Key Stage 1 is based on, but by no means restricted by, the National Curriculum. Whilst emphasis is placed on Literacy and Numeracy all other areas are explored fully and supported wherever appropriate by use of computer technology (ICT).
A typical timetable for a child in Key Stage 1 will include daily lessons in Literacy and Numeracy, plus weekly sessions of Science, History, Geography, Art, French, Design Technology, PSED, Religious Education, Music, Drama, Ballet, ICT, Games, PE and Swimming. A busy and stimulating curriculum, but one that still leaves time for the children to reflect on their own and others’ achievements. At this stage, as always, St. Catherine’s children are encouraged to respect each other and effort is valued as well as ability.
