Welcome !!!

St. Catherine’s is an independent co-educational school for children aged 3 to 11. Pupils are taught in small classes, where each child is viewed as an individual with special talents and a valued member of our community. We aim to produce children who are happy, well-rounded and self-confident, who care about others and the world around them. Our team of experienced, dedicated teachers use the best ideas in contemporary thinking alongside tried and tested methods. The children follow a broad-based curriculum designed to fire their imaginations. Our academic results are outstanding. St. Catherine’s pupils normally have the pick of the region’s best independent schools when they leave at age 11.

Infants

Children make a smooth transition from the Reception Class to Key Stage 1. The broad based curriculum they have already experienced continues and is extended, including the introduction of French by a specialist teacher. The children’s learning in Key Stage 1 is based on, but by no means restricted by, the National Curriculum. Whilst emphasis is placed on Literacy and Numeracy all other areas are explored fully and supported wherever appropriate by use of computer technology (ICT). A typical timetable for a child in Key Stage 1 will include daily lessons in Literacy and Numeracy, plus weekly sessions of Science, History, Geography, Art, French, Design Technology, PSED, Religious Education, Music, Drama, Ballet, ICT, Games, PE and Swimming. A busy and stimulating curriculum, but one that still leaves time for the children to reflect on their own and others’ achievements. At this stage, as always, St. Catherine’s children are encouraged to respect each other and effort is valued as well as ability.

Juniors

Key Stage 2

Years 3 – 6

St. Catherine’s pupils have often exceeded national expectations by the end of Key Stage 1. As they join the juniors at Key Stage 2 the children are further encouraged to fulfil their academic aspirations in a positive teaching environment. The extensive curriculum introduced in Key Stage 1 is further developed and the children enjoy a challenging academic programme.

Our highly experienced teaching staff works with an established team of peripatetic specialists to provide an excellent educational experience. Children go on a stimulating range of educational visits and take part in a variety of workshops and specialist days ranging from poetry and dance through to science challenges.

Our aim is to enable pupils to become articulate, confident, open minded, clear thinking and academically well grounded. Juniors are given more responsibilities and expected to actively contribute to the life of the school. They are encouraged to develop a wide range of interests and activities both in and out of school. The school organises an impressive range of extra-curricular clubs and activities before and after school, as well as at lunchtimes.

During Key Stage 2 the children go on a number of residential trips including a visit to London, a trip to France to practice their language skills and a week long visit to the Lake District to experience out door sports. All of which are designed to develop the children’s growing sense of independence and awareness of life.

School productions are a regular feature of life at St. Catherine’s and all children take part, gaining valuable experience of performing in public. By the end of Key Stage 2 the children have a solid academic foundation behind them and are fully prepared to sit the external examinations for independent secondary schools. St. Catherine’s has a proud and successful educational reputation and the vast majority of our pupils move on to the best independent secondary schools in the region.
