About us

The school was opened in 1976 as a one-form entry primary school. There are at present 179 on roll, divided into 7 single-age classes. General information about all other schools in the area is available from the Authority’s headquarters, the Area Office, Public Libraries and the internet. We at Whirley School are committed to high standards of work and behaviour; how far we are able to succeed depends largely on the friendship and support of you, the parents/carers. We look forward to forging a lasting partnership between yourselves and the school and we hope that your child will have a happy and fruitful stay with us.

AIMS

At Whirley School the child is at the centre of our endeavours. We aim to deliver a broad, balanced curriculum to our children which not only satisfies the specific requirements of the National Curriculum but which also encompasses other activities which we feel appropriate, e.g. play, extra-curricular activities and residential trips.

Our curriculum has a number of aims that support our intention of getting your child:

‘Off to a Flying Start’

To be open and welcoming to children and parents and work in partnership with them and the wider community.

To recognise and provide for the needs of each child, encouraging them to achieve their maximum potential by providing challenging learning experiences.

To foster a love of learning and develop an enquiring mind.

To contribute to a child’s spiritual, emotional, social, moral and physical development.

To develop positive approaches and attitudes to the diverse needs of others and enable children to become responsible and active members of our multi-cultural society.

To support and value all staff and governors in every way possible.

To promote continuing professional development and reflective practice.

To provide a safe, attractive and quality environment for all who use our school.

THE SCHOOL DAY

Sessions Time:

  • Morning 9.00 a.m. - 12.00 noon
  • Afternoon: 1.00 p.m. - 3.30 p.m. Key Stage 2
  • 1.30 p.m. - 3.30 p.m. Key Stage 1

There are short breaks in both morning and afternoon sessions.

Excluding breaks, lunch and registration, approximately 23.75 hours per week in the junior department and 21.25 hour per week in the infant department are spent on teaching (D.f.E.S. minimum recommendations are 23.5 hours and 21 hours respectively.)

Children are expected to be in the playground at the rear of the school by 8.55 a.m. but should not be at school before 8.40 a.m. without the Headteacher’s permission. The rear cloakroomdoors are open at 8.55 a.m. (8.40 a.m. when wet) and 3.25 p.m. each day. At all other times access is via the front entrance. Children who are late must be signed in at the school office.

The school offers before and after school care for parents whose commitments mean these times do not suit their requirements. Please ask for a registration form so that the service can be used in an ‘ad hoc’ way or full time as best suits. There is a charge for this service.

Parents who bring children to school by car are requested not to park on the yellow zig-zag line at the front entrance or to use the school entrance for turning / reversing. Please respect neighbours, no double parking etc.

The rear gate is kept permanently locked as a security measure. Dogs must not be brought intothe school grounds.

If you are unable to be at school to collect your child on any occasion please telephone theschool to avoid panic on his/her behalf.

There is a daily school assembly of a mainly Christian nature. This may be taken by the Head, his Deputy or another member of staff, or by a visiting speaker, and may involve participation by the children. Parents can ask for their children to be excused from assemblies for religiousor personal reasons.
