A Message from Our Headteacher
Welcome to our school website. It has been created and maintained by the children and staff to give existing, past and prospective children, parents as well as members of our community an insight into our school.

I have been head teacher at William Cassidi since September 2006 and in that relatively short time have been impressed by the quality of teaching and learning at the school. However, the school is much more than this, the positive atmosphere that exists at our school fully supports, encourages and fosters excellent attitudes towards each other and there is a strong sense of belonging, caring and consideration. Our children are happy, confident and show pride in their work and our school.
We are always pleased to welcome new parents and children to our school. We are proud of our school, our children, their achievements and the role we play in the life of the local community.

I hope you find our website interesting and informative. It gives an excellent introduction to the life of our school, explaining our Christian ethos, our organisation, the curriculum we teach and the pastoral care we provide.

Everyone is always welcome to contact or visit our school to find out more about us.

Mrs J. Cornelius M.A., B'Ed

Mission Statement
We are committed to providing a quality education for all children at William Cassidi School in a happy, secure, challenging and stimulating learning environment with a caring, Christian ethos. We encourage a feeling of belonging to a school family, where friendship, showing consideration for others, being kind, courteous and polite to everyone are important elements in our school day. We also encourage children to have confidence to take initiative and to take responsibility for and pride in their work and their school environment.

Our School History

Reverend William Cassidi
The Reverend William Cassidi was the Vicar of Grindon, he raised £3,000 to provide a new parish. Since that time the Parish has had 15 vicars, the last one being The Reverend Malcom Goodall.
The first school and church meeting place in Stillington was housed in Cassidi Hall, at the West end of Kirk Street. In 1877 the school was moved to what is now the Village hall in Lowson Street.
This school building was used up until 1960, when the Infant school was moved into the present building to join with the senior children who had been in the building since 1911.
In 1985 the parishes of Wynyard and Grindon were amalgamated and a new Church School was formed. Our school took the name of William Cassidi in honour of the first vicar of our parish.

Homework

The staff and governors of William Cassidi School view homework as important in helping children to develop skills, in particular those of independent learning.

The purpose of homework is to:
1. provide opportunities for parents and carers, pupils and school to work in partnership.
2. to consolidate and reinforce skills and understanding of each subject given.
3. to extend school learning, for example through additional reading.
4. to encourage pupils as they get older to develop the confidence and self discipline needed to study on their own, perparing them for the requirements of secondary school.

Homework, given every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Key stage 2, can take the form of literacy, numeracy, science and topic subjects.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We have 17 clubs at William Cassidi School and children are openly encouraged to take part. Special attention is given to offer a good range of subjects in order to appeal to every child.

These are open at either lunchtime or after school.

For further details please look at each specific report - written by our children themselves.
