Yarm Preparatory School is an integral part of Yarm School although it has its own Head and facilities. Boys and Girls are welcomed into the Nursery at age 3 and continue through the Preparatory School until the majority transfer to the Senior School at age 11.

Our small class sizes and favourable staff support ratios enable us to nurture close and supportive relationships to bring out the best in each individual.

Children are encouraged to try their best and to play a full role in the huge number of activities, music, sport and wide ranging experiences offered at all ages, including residential visits from age 7. French is taught by specialist staff from age 3 whilst specialist teaching in other subjects is introduced as children progress through the school.

Early School

The Early School builds on the fantastic start children make in our own Nursery and other local nurseries, catering for children from 4 to 7 years old. Following the Foundation Stage curriculum, life in our beautifully equipped Reception classes is a lot of fun. The introduction of more formal learning is blended with play-based learning, so that every child is keen to come skipping into school each day right from the start.

Reading is so much fun!

Key Stage 1 forms the next step, with children ready to tackle a broad subject-based curriculum. We give lots of emphasis to exciting subjects such as science, history and geography, which fire children’s imaginations and cultivate their natural curiosity. The areas of P.E., music and French are also given plenty of time and are taught by specialist teachers. All this is supplemented with termly trips, events such as ‘International Week’ and ‘Art Week’, together with visiting theatres and storytellers.

Throughout the Early School we are able to meet the needs of individual children by having small class sizes and an excellent adult:child ratio. Teaching assistants are allocated to every year group and help with reading, group work and tasks set for individual children. We aim to give the very best education to every child — from the child who needs a little extra help through to the child showing considerable potential.

Drama plays an active part of the curriculum!
International Day at School.

All this is enriched by an extra-curricular programme of ever-changing variety. At lunchtimes and after school children may not only be found enjoying standard activities such as music, drama, chess, dance and swimming, but more adventurous things such as origami, glitter club, riding and cartoon drawing! Many of the children also attend our holiday schools, action packed with trips out, art sessions, sports and other fun activities. There is never a dull moment in the Early School!

Yarm School Nursery

Our Nursery is located in The White House, a large property set in beautiful gardens conveniently close to the Preparatory School. Opened in September 2003, the facilities within the Nursery are quite exceptional. There is a wonderful range of specially designed activity and learning rooms, which reflect the areas of learning covered within the Foundation Stage. The colourful and stimulating spaces are interlinked to allow the children to move independently from area to area.
