| Introduction...
St. Mary's School is a Catholic maintained co- educational school catering for pupils in the primary school age range. Whilst essentially Catholic, in ethos, St. Mary's is an inclusive school which welcomes children of all backgrounds and persuasion. St. Mary's has its own Nursery Unit, which has full use of the School's facilities.
|
| About Us...
The school is situated at the southern end of the village of Portaferry, on the Windmill Hill, overlooking Strangford Lough and the Irish Sea.
The present school premises, extended and refurbished, were opened in January 1987 and are modern and well equipped.
There is a footpath from the village to the school, a distance of less than a quarter of a mile. There is a regular bus service from the village to the school for those living outside the statutory distance for walking distance.
The present enrolment of compulsory school age children is 238 with 13 full-time members and one part-time member of staff. The maximum intake, as set down by DENI, is 54. The Nursery Unit offers 26 free part-time places. St.Mary's is essentially a community school committed to providing fully the Northern Ireland Curriculum for all the children entrusted to its care.

There is an excellent choir, which performs at Confirmation, First Holy Communion and other occasions during the year. It also competes in various Festivals and Competitions, such as the UTV Choir of the Year and the Young Voices Festival.
