Our School

Headteacher's Welcome

We are a small rural primary school in South West Durham.

We currently have 51 pupils on roll. We aim to provide all our pupils with a rich broad and balanced curriculum and enrich this whenever we can through providing a wide range of educational experiences.

We were awarded the prestigious Investors in People status in June 2007

Our Mission Statement

 STATEMENT OF AIMS

The aims of Butterknowle Primary School are

  • To enable all our pupils to achieve their full potential in all aspects of school life.
  • To offer all our pupils a full, balanced and differentiated curriculum ensuring continuity and progression.
  • To encourage in all our pupils, an enjoyment and appreciation of the world in which we live.
  • To develop in all our pupils, self-confidence and self-reliance.
  • To encourage every pupil to develop independent learning skills.
  • To develop a secure, happy and caring school community where every pupils is valued equally.
  • To develop a sense of justice and fairness in all our pupils.
  • To develop an awareness of the spiritual aspects of human experience. To develop in each child a sense of cultural identity and an appreciation and understanding of other cultures.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that ensures the spiritual, moral, cultural, social, intellectual and physical development of all our pupils within a secure and stimulating environment.

Curriculum

All our pupils follow the programmes of study for each subject of the National Curriculum.  At the centre of the curriculum are the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. English includes Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Handwriting.  We follow the National Strategies for Literacy and Numeracy.

We have good modern computer facilities.  Each class has an interactive whiteboard with a data projector and all pupils have access to ICT equipment in the classroom. All computers have networked internet access. ICT provision is reviewed and upgraded annually. OFSTED commented on the effective use of ICT in school.

The foundation subjects of the National Curriculum are Design Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Geography, History, Art, Music and Physical Education.  We follow the Durham Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

We believe that education is about developing the whole child and we aim to develop the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of each child as well as teaching the skills and knowledge of the National Curriculum. We are also aware of the 5 key outcomes of Every Child Matters and ensure that our pupils develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes to meet these outcomes.

These are:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being
