Newton Hall Infants’ School was opened in September 1970 and is situated within Newton Hall Estate, Durham.  The building is spacious, bright and a comfortable working environment.

Newton Hall Infants’ School is a school for children between 4+ and 7 years of age.  Parents who are considering sending their children to Newton Hall Infants’ School are welcome to visit the Headteacher and will be shown around the school.  It is the policy of the school to encourage and develop in every possible way parental co-operation and participation.

Parents/carers’ views are sought regularly and they are also kept in contact with what is happening in the school by means of newsletters and meetings where necessary.

The purpose of our school and all who work in it is to support the teaching and learning activities of all those in our care through understanding individual needs, knowing what makes us ‘tick’, opening the door to knowledge, imagination and a love of learning, to enable all to achieve their maximum potential.’

Policy on Admissions

In accordance with the County Admission Policy, admission arrangements are that all children will be admitted on parental request to attend this school.  (Where a pupil has a statement of Special Educational Needs, admission is in accordance with L.E.A policy.)

Children born between 1st September and 31st August will be admitted in the September of the school year in which they are 5.

If the school is over subscribed, applications will be considered according to the policy criteria.

Pre-School Visits

Parents wishing to consider sending their child to our school can telephone or call to make an appointment to visit.  This will ensure that a member of staff is available to meet you and answer any questions.

Application forms for admission are available from the school office in the Autumn of the year prior to that in which your child is due to start school.  Prior to this we can take basic details on children of any age to ‘register an interest’ in the school so that application forms can be sent to you when they become available.

We have pre-school visits arranged during June/July.  If for any reason you and your child cannot attend any of the planned visits we will endeavour to re-arrange others which are more suitable to you.

The Reception staff liaise with the local Nurseries and Playgroups by visiting the children there before they arrive and passing on records and information.  Our aim is to make the transition into school as smooth and stress free as possible, both for the child and the parents.

Aims and Values

We aim to see that in a caring, happy, secure, stimulating environment, children are given every opportunity and encouragement to develop to their fullest potential, making sure that every child is valued as a worthwhile individual.

We seek to promote knowledge and understanding, and mastery of intellectual,

interpersonal and physical skills.  We hope to develop personal qualities, values

and attitudes enabling each child to grow to become an independent worthwhile

member of society.

We are committed to discovering and providing the best learning environment for each child to prepare them as best we can for the future.

At Newton Hall Infants’ School we want to succeed in developing in our children:

·         lively enquiring minds and a love of learning;

·         the ability to question and to argue reasonably and rationally and to think for themselves;

·         quality of spirit, feeling and imagination and a sense of wonder and beauty;

·         ability to work hard and to succeed at tasks both independently and with other people;

·         a sense of self respect, self confidence and self reliance and awareness of needs of others;

·         the knowledge, skills and practical abilities they will need throughout their lives at work and play;

·         a reasonable set of personal attitudes, values and beliefs;

·         an understanding of the world and their place in it;

·         a respect for religious diversity and culture and for the moral values of others.

We intend that our children should:

·         be able to read with a high degree of fluency;

·         speak and write clearly and confidently;

·         write legibly and neatly with attention being paid to spelling and punctuation;

·         use mathematical skills / ideas in everyday situations;

·         know where to look for information and how to record findings;

·         be able to use information technology with confidence;

·         solve problems and find things out as individuals and as part of a team;

·         develop an appreciation and enjoyment of music in a variety of styles, reflecting the richness of our diverse cultural heritage;

·         use a range of creative arts and crafts as a means of expression;

·         take part confidently, with skill and endurance, in a range of physical activities;

·         understand the importance of regular exercise and a balanced diet;

·         show an awareness of local geographical, historical and social influences;

·         show an awareness of other times, places and cultures;

·         be aware of environmental issues and be able to articulate ways and means of safeguarding the world's resources e.g. recycling of rubbish.

We aim to assess progress to identify individual pupils strengths and areas for development, so we can plan the next steps in their learning.  We encourage self-evaluation in our children and keep parents informed of progress and performance.

We care for the children in our school; for

their social and moral needs

§    learning how to be away from home and family, often for the first time;

§    learning how to take a turn and work with other children in class;

§    learning how to play with others and share space and resources.

their physical needs

§    by providing a safe situation for children to work and play;

§    by providing supervision at playtime and lunchtime by caring adults;

§    by providing help and support to children when they are sad, ill or upset.

their emotional needs

§    by providing a secure and welcoming school;

§    by providing a listening ear when children need to express their worries and fears.

their spiritual needs

§    by organising our daily act of worship;

§    by example and encouragement from adults in school and from each other.

their educational needs

§    by providing the best quality learning experiences we can;
