Mission Statement
The main purpose of Hamsteels Primary School is to educate pupils to the highest standards, intellectually, socially, morally, aesthetically, physically, and spiritually, and to help them develop to their full potential.
Aims of the School
- To enable pupils to grow in each of these areas and achieve fullness of life through discovering and developing their talents, by putting before them positive and realistic goals.
- To develop links for children, staff and parents with the community and local interests. Consequently the school learns to become part of the community, to share its concerns and to be open to those who seek help, support and resources.
- To stimulate in each child a sense of curiosity and excitement about the world and to encourage him/her to search for truth, meaning and purpose of life; to provide an opportunity to search for a faith by which to live.
- To promote Christian values within the school and to encourage in pupils a sense of commitment, responsibility, respect for others and a healthy self-esteem.

| Curriculum
Our curriculum is delivered within the school's entitlement grid. The grid encompasses all the requirements of the National Curriculum (New National Curriculum September 2000) and is arranged in termly blocks. This arrangement ensures steady progression and continuity throughout Key Stages 1 and 2. Although our Key Stage 2 curriculum provides for the development in the same areas as that of Key Stage 1, it caters for the growth characteristics of the Key Stage 2 child. Within the structured framework consideration is given to the physical, mental, social and emotional development of each child's needs and maturity level. It is from this range of experiences that basic skills are developed.
Our curriculum provides for the development in the following areas:
Foundation Stage
The Foundation Stage (4 - 5 year olds) provides a teaching programme which promotes children's learning in:
- Communication, languages and literacy
- Mathematical development, numeracy
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Creative development
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
Also in Religious Education:
- Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

| Special Curricular Provision and Arrangements for Pupils with Special Educational Needs
We create a positive environment for learning and we provide for individual differences in the classroom, adapting our teaching methods through careful selection of a wide range of teaching materials. All classes have mixed age ranges. Consultation with parents is arranged if children do not progress as expected. Specific advice is offered so that parents may help at home and extra help is also given at school. At present we have a Special Educational Needs Support teacher for one and a half days a week.
This support may be used in any one of the following methods:
i) In class support by support staff ii) Individual withdrawal with support staff or class teacher iii) Small group withdrawal with support staff or class teacher
If a child experiences persistent learning difficulties, the Head Teacher, in consultation with parents, staff and SEN teacher may call upon the expertise of the Special Needs Support Services, an Educational Psychologist from the Education Psychology Service, speech therapist or medical officer.
Hamsteels is suitable for physically disabled and pupils using wheelchairs.
Able Children
We recognise that gifted and talented children, by virtue of their outstanding abilities, are capable of high performance. We therefore provide a suitably differentiated curriculum for such children. |
