Heighington CE Primary School is situated on the outskirts of the village. It is a single storey building on a large attractive site with many managed environmental areas.
The school has a good reputation within the locality to the extent that some children travel from surrounding towns and villages to attend. At present, we have about 250 children on roll. |
|
The children are our school. It is our sincere belief that the children should enjoy their primary education while at the same time achieving a high standard. Of prime importance is the quality of education. The teaching and support staff are constantly updating their skills to deliver the best possible start to each child's education. At least once a term parents are invited to meet the class teacher and receive a written report ant the end of each year.
The relationship between staff and children is one of mutual respect. The children are taught that all people are important; that tolerance and understanding help everybody to work and play happily within the school community. The standard of behaviour we achieve is very high through the consistent approach to discipline and the rewarding of good behaviour. |
|
Music and sport are activitied that pass beyond the boundary of the School yet they are integral parts of our culture. Children are encouraged to use their musical skills through concerts and assemblies. Many children learn to play string or brass instruments through the peripatetic schools music service, while others are taught the recorder, penny whistle or ocarina by our own staff. We are proud of these achievements.
The children are offered the opportunity to develop sporting skills beyond those which can be taught as part of the PE curriculum. Recently, football coaching, break dancing and country dancing have occupied many after school and for some years now, our school has enjoyed considerable success in inter-school athletics and swimming competitions. |
As our name indicates, we are a Church school, and Rev. Dr. P Thomas, the parish vicar, is a regular and most welcome visitor. In the course of the year we hold several services in St. Michael's church in Heighington, and the children have contributed to the special displays and events held there. We are proud of our strong links with the local community. |
|
The over-riding ethos of our school can perhaps be summed up in our Statement of Aims.
We aim to:
- be a friendly, welcoming and caring school, based on broadly Christian values.
- develop a sense of personal and social responsibility, exemplified by our links with the community.
- provide opportunities for spiritual, moral, social and cultural education, satisfying the needs of and providing equal opportunities for all.

| Behaviour and Reward Policy
"A school's central purpose is that children should learn. Good behaviour makes effective teaching and learning possible. Bad behaviour disrupts these processes" from Discipline in Schools, p57 HMSO 1989
Heighington CE (Cont.) Primary School accepts the need for a Management of Behaviour Policy to ensure that there is an orderly atmosphere in the school and classrooms so that effective teaching is enabled.
The management of behaviour is the shared responsibility of staff, parents and governing bodies.
Aims of the policy:
1. To define clear principles of behaviour for children.
2. To promote good behaviour by adopting a positive reward system.
3. To provide the essential framework for the development of the ethos of the school.
4. To promote respect for others within a moral, spiritual and cultural context.
Entitlement
It is the right of every pupil to expect to be able to learn in an orderly environment. Children should be able to work and play knowing that their efforts will be rewarded and misconduct punished.
Teachers have the right to be able to teach and to expect a high standard of behaviour from their pupils to enable them to deliver the quality of teaching that is required by all parties.
Principles of Behaviour
Opportunities to develop the importance of self-discipline and self -respect and the virtues of honesty, fairness and politeness are many. They will occur in teaching across the curriculum, particularly Religious Education, Assembly and Collective Worship. They will be further promoted by the attitude staff adopt towards children and to other adults.
The aims of this policy can be met if six principles of behaviour are adopted:
Respect for others - helping others when in difficulty caring for younger children supporting other adults in their duties
Honesty in action and speech
Privacy -develop an awareness that certain areas of the school are private, offices, staffroom, other children's classrooms, other people's desks clothes and belongings.
Co-operation- Understand that in some activities problems are better solved and goals more readily achieved through planning and discussing with other children. Understand that space and equipment is limited so sharing is necessary.
Fairness Learn to play games fairly, to take turns and to acknowledge the achievements of others.
Politeness Understand that it is polite to listen and look when other children or adults have something to say. Good manners are appreciated by others.
