Welcome,

Our Mission is....

To identify and fulfil the needs of every pupil and nurture the ‘Growth’ of each individual.

To continue to raise standards and stimulate learning through a range of motivating and challenging experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

To tackle low expectations and raise aspirations by offering clear pathways to further and higher education and work-related training.

To provide a stimulating journey to adulthood and working life so that our pupils take up worthwhile places in their communities.

To equip all pupils to recognise their rights and responsibilities as citizens of their local, wider and global communities.

To engender a belief in lifelong learning for pupils and members of the wider community through a range of family learning experiences and opportunities for adults to return to learning.

King James I Grammar School was founded at the instigation of the widow Anne Swyfte of Durham City. She petitioned that King James I should found a grammar school in North Auckland.

The founding of the school being sanctioned, and with the Royal Seal granted, Anne Swyfte, on April 12th 1605, granted £10 a year to the Governors. A land owner from the Stanhope Parish added £6 per year to the already generous sum.

The location of the school during its first 33 years is a mystery, but in 1638, Thomas Morton, the Bishop of Durham, granted the old chapel of St Anne and the adjoining cottages in the Market Place to the governors to be used as the school house. The school remained here for 200 years.

In 1781 the building was replaced with a new school and chapel. The ground floor housed the school, the upper floor was a new chapel. The ground floor was used by the townspeople for business at weekends.

In 1855 the school moved to the site of the Savings Bank in Silver Street, here it operated until it's final move to South Church Road in 1864.

Welcome to our college prospectus and thank you for considering King James for your child's education.

Nothing in print can compare with the insight you will gain from visiting our college during the working day and you are more than welcome to visit us at any time.

The most important message I can give you as a parent is simple:
- Your child will be safe at King James.
- Your child will be happy at King James, and
- Your child will be given a challenging education at King James.

I'm particularly proud to call King James an inclusive college, in other words we meet the needs of every individual student.
We believe that all of our students have a gift or talent. Some, simply don't know what thier talent is and it's our job to find that talent and nurture and develop it.

At King James we want to raise the aspiration of your child as soon as he/she walks through our doors. If your son or daughter has a low aspirations and expectations then we will change their attitude because we want them to develop a thirst to want to continue with their learning beyond the age of 16 and into adult life.

In January 2005 we were designated a Specialist Media Arts College in recognition of the high standards achieved by students and the quality of provision through the "arts". It is however important to emphasise that we are not just about "arts". Being a specialist college means that all areas of the curriculum benefit through additional funding, the increased use of ICT, digital, video and media technology, and a greater emphasis on "creativity" in teaching and learning.

I look forward to meeting you.

A.S. Rochester, Headteacher.
