Kirk Merrington School

Mission Statement

We seek to create a happy, caring and stimulating environment in which each child will feel confident and secure. In establishing a quality education at Kirk Merrington Primary School we fulfil the requirements of the 1988 Education Reform Act, providing children with a relevant curriculum that is broad, balanced and differentiated which facilitates progression and continuity. In doing so, children will have the opportunity to develop physically, socially, emotionally, morally and intellectually.

The General Aims of Kirk Merrington Primary School.

To:
  • care for your child’s safety, welfare and happiness
  • strive to ensure your child fulfils his/her educational potential
  • provide a balanced, well planned, well resourced curriculum in line with local and national expectations
  • care for the individual needs of your child
  • set high expectations of work and behaviour
  • inform you by personal letter or phone call of any matters pertaining specifically to your child of which you should be aware
  • be open, welcoming and receptive and supportive
  • provide opportunities to discuss individual progress twice a year
  • provide evening meetings on school initiatives which parents are invited to attend.
The following support the development of the whole child:

To:
  • help children develop confidence and self esteem by recognising and developing areas in which they are less confident, always praising their achievements.
  • nurture a caring attitude towards others, the school environment and the wider community by encouraging the children to follow and accept the consistent, positive examples demonstrated by staff, and giving reasons for doing so.
  • help develop a sense of right and wrong in all children through their ownership of school codes of behaviour and acceptance of the need to be
    • honest,
    • fair,
    • polite,
    • well behaved,
    • considerate,
    • tolerant and understanding.
  • encourage children to become self motivated, conscientious and independent learners by:
    • rewarding initiative, consistent efforts and high standards.
    • providing children with the necessary experiences that foster enquiring minds and creativity through stimulating and challenging activities.
    • providing children with activities that develop their knowledge, skills and understanding by providing relevant learning opportunities.
    • fostering links with parents, encouraging them to work in partnership with school by establishing good relationships and regular opportunities for contact.

School Environment
Within the school environment we aim to:

  • offer a broad and balanced curriculum which brings children into contact with a rich variety of learning experience and meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.
  • help children to build upon their experiences at home and in pre-school education and help them to acquire knowledge, skills and concepts relevant to their life now and in the future, in particular the skills associated with language, mathematics and science.
  • develop in children, lively enquiring minds, the ability to question, to argue rationally and to apply themselves to realistic tasks and challenges.
  • seek to develop within each child the powers of imagination, creativity and self-expression. To develop spiritually, a sense of right and wrong, good behaviour, healthy living, consideration for others and care of the environment.
  • provide a moral, social and cultural education that ensures equal opportunities for all pupils regardless of socio-economic background, ethnic origin or gender.
  • nurture each child?s emotional and spiritual development.
  • ensure a match between the ability of the individual children and their learning activities and to assess and record pupils progress so as to inform future planning of their work.
  • actively seek to develop community links and encourage parental involvement.

Care Throughout the School

Staff and children work together to make our school safe, happy and well cared for. Everyone is involved in deciding how to do this. Each class has a Behaviour Plan which is taught and reinforced regularly. Children are also taught school routines and other school behaviour expectations. We have a Home/School Contract which we ask parents, children and staff to sign.

We have a wide range of rewards which recognise 'good' behaviour, manners, effort, achievement, attitude and special efforts. These are celebrated in both assemblies and within classrooms.

All staff work hard to help children choose the correct behaviour and understand why they need to do so. Inappropriate behaviour may result in sending a letter home or a request for parents to come into school. For totally unacceptable behaviour, a child may be formally excluded.

We believe that good communication between home and school enables teachers to teach and children to learn. Kirk Merrington Primary School sees positive support from parents as being a key route to successful learning.

Safety at School

Fire Drills
We have fire drills to ensure the children and staff are aware of the routine in the event of fire.

Visitors

We welcome visitors to our School and hope that they enjoy their stay with us. For reasons of security the doors to the school are locked from the outside. Visitors enter through one of the two main entrances and report to the school office. Do try to make an appointment to ensure the person you want to see is available.

Safety Before & After School

Children should come into school from 8.45 a.m. onwards when the playground will be supervised. Please help everyone by walking your child to school if at all possible to help ease the congestion around the school in the morning and in the evening. This will also help people to become fitter and healthier and will develop good habits in the children.
