Welcome to Shotton Hall School

Shotton Hall School is a Specialist Arts College and Community School in County Durham which caters for over one thousand young people from the age of 11 to 16 years. Designated a Specialist School in Performing Arts in September 2002, we firmly believe that the Arts give young people the confidence and greater self esteem to achieve in many other areas of the curriculum.

As a member of the Creative Partnerships initiative we have actively sought to involve our students in many creative and artistic activities. In recent times we have worked with the English National Opera in a production of "Carmen" and a group of year 11 students has worked with Baltic in Gateshead to produce a video and an interactive CD about the listed Passmore Pavilion, an architectural structure of note only a few hundred metres from the school. May 2004 saw the school receive further recognition of its excellence in the arts by receipt of Gold Arts Mark Award.

How to Organise Homework

What's for homework?

Make sure you write down clearly what your homework is. If you're not sure, ask the teacher who set it.

When should I give it in?
Write in your planner when the work is due in. Check your planner every evening to make sure you have time to complete it.

Who can help me?
Teachers, parents, older brothers and sisters, grandparents, friends, librarians, etc. Any of these people could be valuable sources for information.

Where should I do my homework?
Try to find a quiet place with no distractions. This could be at home or at school in the Resource Centre...
Remember?

Pupils who regularly complete homework are more successful in exams.
Presentation is important. Always do your homework as carefully as you can.
You will be rewarded for completing all homework well.

Homework Guidelines
You will receive information in September including the recommended night for homework for each of you subjects.
Sometimes homework will not be set on the recommended night and another night may be used. When this happens you will be given more time to complete the homework.
If you feel you have too much homework to complete in the time allowed discuss it with your subject or form teacher.

Why Homework?
Homework helps you with work in a particular subject. This may be to revise, learn or develop work covered in class. You may wish to follow up a particular interest or develop expertise. You may do this by working at home.
Homework helps you to learn skills of organising your time, your work and yourself It helps you plan, research, revise and learn, which are useful skills for all subjects.
Homework helps you to develop personal qualities, such as self-discipline, independence, confidence and a sense of achievement. These will be useful in your school work and later throughout your life.
Homework gives people who care about you, both at school and at home, the opportunity to help with your studies when appropriate.
