1957 - 2007

 Principal4.jpg

Hello, and a very warm welcome to St Michael’s College, Enniskillen, a Catholic Diocesan College established by the Bishop of Clogher in 1957.

I hope you find this website interesting and informative.

As a College of over 700 boys we enjoy the advantage of an excellent location on a spacious site and are fortunate to have modern state of the art facilities which are second to none.

In St Michael’s College our pupils' educational, cultural, sporting and spiritual needs are met by a highly qualified and dedicated staff, including our Chaplain, Fr Martin O’Reilly.

We strive not only to provide an academic and vocational education of a high standard, but above all to create an ethos which encourages the development of the whole perso n. Our aim is to ensure that every pupil’s experience of life in our College is a safe, happy and fulfilling one, s ummed up in our motto:

Orare Studere Agere

(to pray, to study, to act)

The range of activities and opportunities available to our pupils extends well beyond the classroom. In this website we have tried to give an impression of the variety of experiences offered in our College.

I hope this website gives you a sense of our College and I wish your child well, in which ever school he goes to.

With every good wish

Yours faithfully

Mr Eugene J McCullough

Principal

The Foundation of the College

St Michael’s College was founded in 1903. It moved to its present site in 1957 and was designated a Diocesan College by the then Bishop of Clogher, Most Rev Dr Eugene O’Callaghan. It was established to cater for the educational needs of Catholic boys from the Northern half of the Diocese of Clogher. The building opened in 1957 was designed to cater for 160 pupils. Boarding facilities were available for about 60 boys. Since its foundation the College has continued to grow and expand. It now has 700 students, a teaching staff of50 and a support staff of 35.

Principles:  Education and Prevention

(a)    The College recognises that substance misuse is a major threat to the health and well-being of pupils, their families and the wider community.

(b)    St Michael’s College is committed to assisting all pupils develop the confidence, attitudes and social skills necessary to enable them to resist the pressures and influences which could lead to substance misuse.

(c)    The school will therefore ensure that drugs education will be provided for all students via the Pastoral Programme, Religious Education Programme, Health Education Programme, Science Education Programme, and, where practical, through all areas of the curriculum.

It is the policy of St Michael’s College, Enniskillen to keep the premises free from illegal substances and to protect students while under care of the school.

The school is implementing the guidelines put forward by the Department of Education in its circular 2004/9.  Consequently, where there is reasonable belief that a pupil is in possession of an illicit substance, either on his person or in his belongings, or where illicit substances are found on the school premises, or if there is any doubt about the nature of the substance, the parent(s)/guardian(s) or pupil(s) involved will be notified.  The school has a duty under law to report any incidents or suspected incidents involving controlled (illegal) drugs to the PSNI.

Pastoral Care

All aspects of school life, its planning, organization and provision of extra-curricular activities seek to promote conditions for the positive growth of students and staff. The school places emphasis on the development of positive relationships between all staff and students, the creation of a positive learning environment and the development and maintenance
of a caring community.
The aims of the Pastoral Care Programme in St Michael’s are consistent with and so reinforce the ethos and aims of the school. We aim to create an environment where the pupils are valued as individuals and are encouraged to develop to their full potential. We believe that a happy pupil will be a successful pupil and we strive to make this a reality through our Pastoral Care System.
A Year Head supported by the Head of Key Stage and the Co-ordinator of Pastoral Care oversees the general welfare of all students in the year group. Each student is assigned to a Form Teacher who delivers the schools Personal, Social and Health Education Programme. Students have the same Form Teacher throughout the key stage.
All classes have a timetabled form class every two weeks. The topics for this programme, which areamended according to the identified needs of thestudents fall into a number of categories:

• Anti-Bullying issues
• Careers Education
• Drugs Education/Substance Abuse
• Health Education
• Moral Development
• Personal Safety
• Relationships and Sexuality Education
