It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Parkstone Grammar School web site. We hope that this will give you a flavour of life at this forward-looking school where we combine traditional values with a progressive curriculum.

Ms Shinwell

Parkstone Grammar School's reputation for academic excellence is well known and we aim to develop in girls a love for learning and a desire to achieve the best. However we do not only focus on academic achievement. We place a high value on courtesy and consideration for others. We help the girls to develop self-discipline, a sense of self-worth, independence of thought and confidence in expressing themselves. We encourage participation in a wide range of activities outside the classroom and our music, sport, art and drama give the girls tremendous opportunities to explore and extend their talents, often with national recognition. We hope that every girl will enjoy the experience of being a member of our school community.

Parkstone is a six-form entry selective school with 1005 students from 12-18 of whom 300 are in the Sixth Form. We are very popular and heavily oversubscribed and although most of our girls live in the Borough of Poole, many come from neighboring authorities eg Dorset and Bournemouth. We believe our popularity can be attributed to a positive school ethos, high standards, excellent examination results, high quality teaching and a caring and friendly approach.

We became a Beacon School in September 2002 and we have been involved in a number of activities with local schools supporting work in a range of different departments from environmental work in Science to puppet making in Art and English.

Designation as a Science Specialist College took place in September 2003 and this marks a really exciting point in the life of the school. Our new status will help us to further improve our facilities and the educational experience we offer not only to our students but to the wider community.

Our website and prospectus tell you a great deal about us but there is no substitute for a personal visit. You are warmly invited to come and visit us to see the school at work. I hope you find our website interesting and informative and that it will prompt you to want to see more!

Anne Shinwell, Headteacher

Sixth Form

Sixth Form at Parkstone is a great opportunity to flourish in a positive and caring environment where the ability of every student is recognised, developed and rewarded. Aiming high and enabling students to achieve their potential are all part of the ethos and Parkstone Grammar School girls have a high success rate in entering their chosen universities and professions.

New students entering the Sixth Form, become part of a group of approximately 360 year 12 and 13 students. They are placed alongside existing Parkstone girls in tutor groups of about 20 students and quickly adjust to Sixth Form life.

The Sixth Form places new and very different demands on students, who are challenged with the freedom and responsibility of managing their own learning.

Sixth Formers play an active part in school life and take considerable responsibility in the running of the school. They are seen as important and effective role models by the younger girls.

Sixth Form students no longer wear uniform and may drive to school. They can go out at lunchtime and there are occasions when they may go home to study.

Students are given advice on how to complete CV's and Personal Statements, and attend talks on careers, gap years and university. At the end of year 12 and beginning of year 13 students are guided through their UCAS applications.

Sixth Form Options

The timetable is made up of lessons in chosen subjects plus supporting lessons and free periods. Students are given both specific and general tasks to do outside the lessons. They need to organise their own time effectively and prioritise carefully, making sure that they have enough time to carry out research and to read about their subject. Students are expected to spend up to five hours per subject per week on homework, plus extra time for reading.

A wide range of subjects are available to all students who have achieved a minimum of five GCSE's (including Mathematics and English) at grades A* to C. Students must also normally have an A or B in the subjects chosen at AS Level, or in a related subject at least a C grade. Many girls choose courses which combine arts and sciences, whilst others enjoy new subjects such as Economics, Psychology and Sociology.

There is also a Year 13 Enrichment program running the following AS Level courses: Citizenship, Science for Public Understanding and Critical Thinking. Geology is offered to students in the sixth form, this is taught at Poole Grammar School. Other possible subjects are:

  • Advancing Physics

ADMISSIONS

ADMISSIONS AT 12

Only girls who attain the required standards in the prescribed arrangements for selection by reference to high ability will be eligible to be considered for admission to the school. These arrangements require that in order to be eligible for consideration for admission to the school, would-be students must pass an entrance examination.

ADMISSION AT AGES 13 - 15

Although the usual ages of admission are 12 and 16, suitably qualified students aged 13 to 15 may be admitted when there are vacancies. Such students will be required to produce evidence that they can benefit from a grammar school education. This is normally a report from their current school and the results of tests administered by the staff of Parkstone Grammar School. Parents should send to the LA details of their daughter’s name, address, date of birth, home telephone number, present school and name of Headteacher. If there is a vacancy in the year group, students who wish to be admitted to the school will be required to sit an entrance test. The place will then be offered in accordance with the rank order of the test scores. In the event that two or more applicants are of equal ranking for this place then priority will be given to the girl whose permanent address is nearest to Parkstone Grammar School measured by a Geographical Information Systems using the shortest, safest and practicable walking route using the centre line of public roads and footpaths from the student’s home address to the nearest school gate for the use of students. In these circumstances, if the applicants live in the same block of flats the allocation will be made by way of drawing lots.

Alternatively if the year group is full, you may still request that the school tests your daughter. However, the school will be unable to offer a place as the school cannot offer places above its Published Admissions Number but you will have the right of appeal.
