Welcome to our School
At Callow End we offer all the advantages of a small, family orientated, village school. In particular we provide small classes and excellent teaching assistant support for learning. We have a maximum of 24 children in a class and a dedicated Y6 class of no more than 12 children, which provides a valuable opportunity for the children to develop their skills on the run up to high school. We are an inclusive school and seek to celebrate the individual talents and promote the achievement of all our pupils by delivering a broad and well balanced curriculum. Our results record show that our academic standards are very high, but this is not at the expense of other aspects of the curriculum such as art, music, P.E and outdoor activities. The curriculum is supported by both school visits and visiting theatre groups, musicians and artists all of which we feel enrich our children’s childhood and promote their learning.
We are in the top 5% of schools nationally for Value Added, which reflects the progress each individual child makes from Year 2 to Year 6 regardless of their academic ability. Small year groups, with each individual child carrying a high weighting, do result in some variation year to year but overall our standards at Key Stage 2 are currently in the top 25% of schools nationally. Small class sizes enable us to personalise children’s learning. Children with special needs are supported both within the classroom and within withdrawal groups, whilst gifted and talented children are given the opportunity to work at a challenging level.
Children’s individuality and achievement is celebrated by means of our “Child of the Week” display and our children have the opportunity to express themselves through our year group Open Assemblies and the School Council.
We have a very active Friends Association who organise many fund raising activities and social events. It is through this essential, and most welcome support, that we are able to supplement our resources in school. The Friends have purchased many items, such as computers, play houses, picnic tables, and adventure equipment. They have also helped fund the development of the Environmental Area and contributed towards more expensive educational visits.
Parents are encouraged to be actively involved with the school and its day to day organisation. Parents offer their assistance with sharing books, art and craft activities, swimming, sports clubs and educational visits. Regular ‘Helping Hands’ workshops are held in school and the help provided by parents at these sessions is invaluable. We also operate a “Better Reading” scheme in which parents are trained in reading techniques and subsequently support children by delivering a ten week programme of structured reading skills. Parents are needed and valued at Callow End and their contribution and commitment is greatly appreciated.
We value our children and their families and believe that our school is a wonderful place for children to spend a happy, stimulating childhood.
