Dear Parents / Carers

Thank you for your interest in this outstanding school. a school of which I believe I am right to be proud. In the last few years, we have had unprecedented success in every facet of education with:

  • Record GCSE results 2003 to 2007, culminating in the 2007 cohort over-performing to achieve 60% A*-C with all departments having at least one A grade.
  • 64% A*- C in English - Ellie Hobday's paper in the top 5% in the country
  • 2006 results placed us in the top 2% of schools in the country for adding value to a child in their five years of education with us

These results highlight the major improvement that all students make at our school, whatever their ability. However this school is much more than a 'results factory' where the child is forgotten. There are:

  • 24 extra curricular clubs
  • A Breakfast Club, starting at 8.00am with healthy and traditional options
  • 6 experienced PE teachers provide a variety of sporting activites & teams
  • 300 children enjoyed the opportunity to experience a foreign country: there were six supervised trips in 2007 to places as diverse as China and Italy.
  • Many opportunies within our vibrant Performing Arts and Art department. The whole school shows are inspirational. 'Godspell' one of last year's shows played to an audience of over 1000 customers and headlined the county showcase 'Voices and Visions' with over 100 CWLC students taking part.

To summarise, we believe there is something for every child here and, crucially, our students are happy to attend. We have:

  • The best attendance in the city - four years running!
  • No fights 2006-7
  • Parents unequivocally happy with standards. In our latest independent, anonymous questionnaire (Kirkland Rowell 2007), 94% stated that this was ' a good school and their child was happy at the school'.

However, please do not believe Headteacher hyperbole. Come and judge for yourself. Is this the school for your child? Do your believe in our staff - all experts in their subjects? See our 21st century facilities with four million spent in one year and more to come! Read our latest Ofsted - 16 areas judged 'outstanding' . Read our prospectus and newsletters.

Appointments to see our school 'at work' are always welcomed. I know you will be impressed; I was. I look forward to meeting you and answering any further questions you may have.

Yours sincerely

Neil S Morris

Headteacher

The School

CWCL is a co-educational mixed comprehensive school of over 1,100 students with a staff of over 100 teaching and support staff, who serve the St. John's and surrounding community on the west side of Worcester City. Please use the links on the left to find out more about the school.

We have a committed, friendly and well qualified staff and benefit from a highly supportive governing body. We are proud to be one of the first 'Investors in People' in the Worcestershire Education Authority and have three times been re-recognised as such. We are also one of a small number of 'Partnership Promotion' school in the West Midlands area supporting excellence in Teacher Training. In September 2005 we gained Specialist Language Status and this has seen rapid improvements in facilities and courses offered. We have also just won an 'International Schools Award.'

Our school occupies a large site on the west bank of the River Severn with views of the Malvern Hills and of Worcester City and its Cathedral. The school was formed in 1983 by the amalgamation of two schools, and its buildings vary in age and architecture. It has been substantially modernised and re-equipped and now boasts a range of excellent facilities.

Amongst these facilites are:

  • A large Learning Resources centre with computerised multi-media facilites and fast broadband Internet access, which is open from 8.00am before school and until 5pm after school to support home work and extended study.
  • Daytime use of an excellent sports hall with a wide range of sports facilites
  • Five fully-linked networked computer suites always available for classes with up to date hardware supporting industry standard software and fast broadband internet access.
  • Over 250 computers across the school site, each student having their own e-mail address
  • Specialist and well equipped rooms for all subjects that require it.
  • Two large assembly halls and a large gymnasium
  • Outdoor sports facilities with a wide range of hard standing and grassed areas as well as a new basketball court.
  • A full black out performing arts studio with a sprung floor
  • A dining hall selling a healthy balanced range of meals and snacks with cash cafeteria open to all students for breakfast and during morning and lunchtime breaks.
  • Newly refurbished and fully equipped Modern Language, English and Maths teaching rooms

In addition one and a half million pounds will be spend on major refurbishment this school year to provide:

  • New toilet blocks
  • New Science classroom - January 2008
  • Two Astro-turf fields for January 2008
