Student Support

The process of transfer to the College starts early. During Year 6 discussion takes place with primary school teachers so that we are well informed about each child’s progress.  By the time September arrives, most children will have already visited the school and with the help of the children’s primary teachers, the Head of Year will already have a clear picture of each of them.

The Form Tutor is the key person for your child throughout his/her time at College. It is the Form Tutor who will meet them each day for registration.  He or she will help children through any concerns, help monitor their progress and encourage them to get the best out of school.  Your child’s Tutor is the first point of contact in the school and we ask that you address all notes to them.

Within our student support teams, in addition to the Form Tutor, each year is led by a Head of Year.  Year leaders work with the Directors of the Key Stages.  We have a Director of Key Stage 3, who has an overview of Years 7 and 8 and a Director of Key Stage 4, who has an overview of Years 10 and 11 and looks after their transfer on to post-16 study.  The Pastoral Deputy Headteacher has an overview of Year 9.

Site Security

We go to great lengths to ensure that the College site is safe and secure for all.  At break and lunchtimes, staff patrol the site and provide key supervision in the main student areas.  We have introduced a new safety system with CCTV camera security that covers integral areas; we have installed new perimeter fencing as well as reducing the external entry points to the College.  All site visitors, including parents, are asked to report to reception on arrival and to sign out on departure.  Vehicle access onto the College site is controlled during the day and on signing out visitors must obtain a token in order to exit the site via the car park barrier.

Students are responsible for their own belongings, and therefore, all personal items must be clearly named.

Medical Arrangements

Garforth Community College has a fully qualified First Aid Officer on duty during the College day who attends to students if they require medical attention.  We do allow self-administration of medicines, on condition that the medicines are kept with the First Aider and a parental letter of consent is provided with the medication details including dosage, times and any advice on storage.

Our First Aider also arranges the immunisation programme and health assessments and appointments, where necessary.  If a child needs to be sent to a doctor or hospital during school hours every effort is made to inform parents as soon as possible.

Student Records

To help us to support your child, it is important that our records are kept up-to-date.  Information recorded on students is, of course, available for parents to see on request.  Essential information includes names, addresses, emergency telephone numbers, form and set lists, options and examination entries, and transport arrangements.  Please do let us know whenever any changes in your child’s details occur.  This information is essential should there ever be an emergency.

Confidential Information

If there is any confidential information that you feel we should know in order to understand and supplement your child better, please write a personal letter to the Form Tutor.  You may also arrange to speak with the Form Tutor or Head of Year.

Child Protection

Children and young people have individual rights.  Above all, they have the right to have their basic needs met and to be free from harm.  The protection of our children is enshrined in law and our school procedures adhere to those defined by Education Leeds.  At the heart of this policy is a referral to the Social Services Division.  A senior member of the College’s Leadership Team has a specific responsibility for child protection issues.

Protection from Bullying

Our College community treats all accusations of bullying as serious matters of concern.  Teaching and support staff are aware of the need for vigilance and will follow up any incident that could involve bullying.  Students are encouraged to take a key role in making our school a safe and happy place for everyone.  They should tell someone if they are being bullied or see any form of bullying.  Parents should contact the Form Tutor or Head of Year if they suspect that their child is being bullied.

r p edwards - headteacherI am very proud to present Garforth Community College’s website. I believe this website presents a clear picture of the exciting and innovative school I have the honour of leading.

Garforth Community College is one of the most successful schools in the north of England. We believe our commitment to high standards continues to ensure all our students reach their potential with whatever skills they possess. There are no barriers to achievement in this College and teachers, parents and students work together to create an unbeatable team with one common goal - the best possible success for every child.

Our staff are highly qualified and dedicated professionals with a diverse range of talents and skills. They all work tirelessly to support the education of the children at this College. That is why our examination results continue year on year to be amongst the best in the country.

We have a strong tradition of success that is built upon a firm foundation of strong pastoral care. We believe that every child is capable of exceeding our expectations and that a climate of order and security, focused on achievement, ensures their success.

In recent years our successes have been recognised by many organisations, commending us time and time again as an outstanding school. Ofsted, HMI and the Dfes have all described this school as excellent, and we continue to achieve success, regularly receiving awards for outstanding performance. We are also a Specialist School in the Performing Arts, which has enabled us to develop many outstanding specialist facilities not normally found in a Comprehensive school.

Above all, Garforth Community College is committed to teamwork. We believe that by working together we can ensure success for everyone. Every child has unlimited potential, it is our duty to tap into that reservoir of talent, so that everyone achieves their best.

Perhaps the best way to get a true flavour of our College is to visit and see us in action. I know you will be amazed!

I look forward to meeting you soon.
