"What We Believe" features designs from children in all class groups and "Mission Statement" contains photographs which give a flavour of the life of children at our school.

What We Believe

Mission Statement

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School was founded by the Catholic Church to provide education for baptised Catholic children. The school is conducted by its governing body as part of the Catholic Church in accordance with its trust deed and instrument of government , and seeks at all times to be a witness to Jesus Christ. Whenever there are more applications than places available, priority will always be given to Catholic applicants in accordance with the over-subscription criteria listed below. All applicants are required to declare their positive support for the aims and ethos of the school.

The governing body has responsibility for admissions to this school and intends to admit 20 pupils to Foundation Stage in the school year which begins in September 2007.

The Admission Policy of St Joseph’s School is designed to ensure that there are sufficient places available in the school for children of the identified catchment area. In the event that applications for places exceed the number of places available, the admissions criteria set out below will be strictly adhered to. In applying the criteria, the governing body will note the particular importance of ensuring that children of 5, 6 & 7 years of age are taught in classes of no more than 30. The governing body acknowledges not only the legal requirement regarding Infant class size limits as set out in the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (Part 1, Chapter 1) but supports the principle that children’s learning can be affected by the size of the class.

Pupils will be admitted full-time in September of the year in which they are five, subject to the proviso that children whose fifth birthday falls between 1st January and 31st August may be admitted part-time (mornings only) until December 31st and full-time from the beginning of the Spring Term at the discretion of their parents / guardians.

Admissions 2007 - 2008

Subject to the above over-riding considerations, admission arrangements will be as follows: -
Admission to the school will be made by the Governing Body in accordance with stated parental preference subject to the following set of admissions criteria forming a priority order where there are more applications for admission than the school has places available:

a) Looked after children from Catholic families
b) Catholic children resident within the parish of St. Mary and St. Joseph, Aire Valley (including Bingley, East Morton, Micklethwaite, Eldwick, Crossflatts, Cottingley, Wilsden, Sandy Lane, Harecroft, Harden and Ryecroft)
c) Catholic children who have a brother or sister at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School at the time of application
d) Catholic children not resident within the parish of St. Mary and St. Joseph, Aire Valley
e) Other looked-after children
f) Non-Catholic children who have a brother or sister in the school at the time of application
g) Children of other Christian denominations or of other Faiths whose parents are in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the school and whose application is supported by a minister of religion or an appropriate religious leader
h) Children whose parents are in sympathy with the aims and ethos of the school
i) Other applicants

If categories (a) and (b) are oversubscribed, children who satisfy both (a) or (b) and (c) will have priority over children who satisfy only category (a) or (b)
Where the offer of places to all the applicants in any of the sub-categories, listed above would still lead to over-subscription, then the walking distance measured from home address to the Parish Church of Sacred Heart, or St Mary & St Monica, as defined above, whichever is the nearer to the home address will be used to determine priority.
