Dear reader Cockington Primary School welcomes children aged rising 5 to 11 years: it serves part of Chelston, Torre and the town area of Torquay, right down to the harbour. We are not in Cockington village!
We are 800m from the sea front, our view looking out over Torre Valley playing fields, and the pavilion; and some of the many small, ‘villa’ hotels, which characterize this tourist part of Torbay.
The original Victorian Cockington School still stands, about 200 m away from this site, in Old Mill Lane. The new building with low-profile, red-brick facades, were opened in 1983. We are situated on a compact level site, with two playgrounds, a ball-court, a small raised garden and opportunities to play on the extensive, adjoining grassy grounds of Torre Valley. We have 12 classrooms in our main building, two mobile classrooms and one being used by a Nursery. We have approximately 400 pupils on roll, and many supportive and hard-working staff and parents associated with the school. Our classrooms and corridors are literally bursting with a range of activities, role-play, painting, small group work, modelling, as well as the full range of subject areas.
Being on a totally level site, we welcome pupils who have disabilities, and are supportive and knowledgeable about pupils with special educational needs. We offer a small school unit, called Rainbow room, to provide nurture and support to all pupils when in need. Our teaching and support staff are particularly well trained and skilled.
Thanks to our PTA we operate an indoor 25 metre heated swimming pool from May until October. Parents and families, and other local schools also enjoy the use of our pool out of hours. We are also proud of our ICT suite, which offers 30 PC stations with additional use of PCs in our mini-suites. Following a pilot scheme many of our classrooms are also equipped with electronic whiteboards. The Thompson library is a wonderful school resource and is full of excellent reading and reference books for all ages.
A high proportion of our pupils learn to play a musical instrument, lessons can be arranged through school and are attended onsite. At least one year group in Key stage 2 go out on a residential. This year our Year 6 pupils went to Outdoor Activities centre in Bude , which was a great success and are already planning the return trip! All pupils regularly experience trips and visits to support the National curriculum and extend their links to the community. After school we offer a range of activities, according to available staff in our school and other local schools- French, Spanish, Craft, Athletics, Football, Netball, Tennis and Chess. Community-Education provides a range of classes for parents, at certain points in the year, too.
We hope you enjoy our web-site, and maybe you might come and visit us at Cockington Primary We hope so
