Ermington Friends Association
The “Friends” are a body of voluntary parents who raise funds for the benefit of the pupils in our school. The committee consists of a chairperson, a secretary and a treasurer. Currently the following people hold these positions:
Chairperson: Ann Willcocks, mother to James, year 6. William, year 4 and Matthew year 2. As well as baby Katie.
Secretary: Estelle Chevalier, mother to James, year 4.
Treasurer: Marie Lord, mother to Sophie, year 2 as well as baby Jack.
Our purpose is to raise much-needed funds to donate to the school. In the past year we donated £1500 to the school to pay for an arts week where all the children took part in many different arts projects from watercolour painting with an artist to enamelling and pottery, a yurt was put up in the school field for the week. We also donated some money for the whole school trip to the Eden project as part of the science week. Another part of the science week was the explorer dome which we had for a day in the school hall. We have also purchased new dictionaries for the classroom. A major purchase was some of the new gym mats you see in the hall stacked on a purpose built trolley.
Our fund raising efforts mean that our children can benefit by having these extras that the governments school budget would not cover.
We have two main fund raising events during the year; the big one would be our Summer fair, held in July on the same day as the sports day. £1200 was raised at our last summer fair. The other big event is our School Christmas fair. This is THE place for the children to do their Christmas shopping. As well as the fairs we have a plant sale at Lukesland, and school discos. We also do a good cream tea in the summer and serve refreshments at school events.
As well as the serious business of fund raising it is an excellent opportunity to meet other parents; occasionally we have been known to support the hostelries in the area!
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 25th September 2007 in the school hall at 7.00pm posters will be put up and reminders will go in the Friday Flyer. We meet about two or three times a term, in the evenings. We always love to see new faces. Perhaps if you can spare the time we may see you. Don’t worry if you cannot attend the meetings; it is not easy with a young family. If you are unable to attend a meeting but would like to help we are always looking for helpers. I am sure Mrs Melville-Cross will point me out.
Looking forward to meeting you.
