Monkleigh Primary School is located between the towns of Bideford & Great Torrington in the small village of Monkleigh. The original school dates back to 1875, but has had various extensions since that time. We have large grounds with wonderful views over the rolling Devon countryside. On average, we have between 70 and 80 children who are taught in 3 mixed age classes.

We aim to be a welcoming and friendly school where children, staff, parents & governors work together to provide a happy & stimulating working environment.

We hope you find our web site interesting. If you would like to come and visit our school, please do contact us to arrange a time.

Monkleigh village is situated in a rural setting about four miles south of Bideford and three miles west of Great Torrington in North Devon just off the A386. The local economy is based on agriculture and there is a strong community spirit in the village with the school playing a vital role.

The school was built by a local family and established in 1875. The main building still remains but there have been additions over the years including kitchen area, extra classroom, a new classroom with indoor toilets and new office areas. To the front of the building is a fully resourced mobile unit housing the Infant classroom.

The school now has a purpose built mini IT suite although each classroom is also equipped for IT studies. The suite has 8 computers. They all have their own colour printers. All computers are linked to the Internet.

All classrooms have a comprehensive range of maths resources, worktables, carpeted area and class library.

The school has a good sized playing field [approximately 2 acres] to the rear of the main building that has a football pitch. It also has a large hard play area - the school places a high emphasis on outdoor

Parents

Friends of the School

All parents become members of the Friends of the School. They have organised many kinds of social and fundraising events over the years and have helped us purchase a wide variety of extra items which have enhanced the children’s learning experiences at school.

Transfer to Secondary School

Parents may express a preference for the school to which their child transfers at the age of eleven. The majority of our pupils transfer to Great Torrington Community School.

Pupils spend a day familiarising themselves with the new school in the summer term prior to them leaving. Staff from Great Torrington School also visit the local primary schools during that term.

Events

The children will be learning about the work of the Air Ambulance and doing some fund-raising for them.

Family Groups have begun on Friday afternoons. We have split the children into 3 mixed age groups and they take part in a number of fun activities.

The after school clubs are flourishing. We have over 40 children coming to the sports club on Thursdays after school, and a similar number waiting to have a slot at our computer club on Mondays after school. A lunchtime chess club will also be operating.

A number of football and netball matches against other school are planned.

A visit to see a touring theatre group is planned for early December.
