Welcome to Otterton Primary School

This site attempts to introduce to you our school, our staff, pupils, governors, friends and community; our buildings, play areas, facilities and resources, our philosophy, curriculum, priorities and plans.

Otterton C of E Primary SchoolIn one sense, this brochure attempts the impossible - for a school is a living thing and as soon as it is committed to paper it loses its vitality, its atmosphere, its essence. We hope that you will come and see us, talk to us, listen to us and in this way get a better picture of what it is like to be part of Otterton Church of England Primary School.

In another sense, as soon as the brochure is written, it becomes out of date - at least I hope it does because at Otterton we believe in moving with the times whilst still holding on to all of the good things which have made, and continue to make, the small village school such a wonderful place for children to start their education. This is why, if your child becomes a pupil at Otterton, you will receive a regular flow of information, keeping you up to date with everything that is happening - and we hope that this flow of information will not only be one way.

I hope that you find this brochure helpful and that you enjoy reading about us. I also hope that you will want to know more and will get in touch again. I hope that you will feel that your child will be happy at Otterton Church of England Primary School.

Yours sincerely,

Pat Fowler
Headteacher

Vision Statement

To achieve the highest standard of Education enabling each child to reach their potential within a caring Christian environment, being an integral part of the local community and encouraging the community to be involved in the school.

School Aims

Our basic aim is to help all our children to reach their full potential and to encourage the individual to become an independent learner. In order to do this we aim, as a church school, to provide a Christian environment, which leads to a school with a safe, happy atmosphere, relaxed without being lax.

  • We aim to nurture the spiritual development of the children in our care.
  • We aim to develop the means of ready communication through written and spoken language.
  • We aim to develop the skill of reading, both as a pleasure and as a tool for learning.
  • We aim to develop mathematical skills through understanding.
  • We aim to encourage scientific awareness and curiosity and to develop a healthy mind and body.
  • We aim to develop an awareness of the heritage around us through work in History, Geography and Religious Education.
  • We aim to encourage appreciation of the creative arts and to teach the skills related to them.
  • We aim to provide the opportunities for physical expression in sport and drama.
  • We aim to foster a sense of belonging to the local community.
  • We aim to demonstrate the importance of good manners and considerate conduct.
  • We aim to create an environment in which every person concerned with the school: staff, parents, governors and friends can usefully contribute to the development of our chidlren’s education.
  • We aim to embrace and promote equal opportunities, cultural diversity and oppose all forms of racism.
