Welcome from the Headmaster

Hello and a very warm welcome to the St Peter’s website.  Here, as a prospective parent, you should find most of the information you are looking for to enable you to make a decision about your child’s first or next step in education. Our 28 acres of beautiful grounds overlooking the Exe estuary provide a warm, friendly and safe environment in which children are given a host of new experiences to explore, building their confidence and stimulating their desire to learn.

St Peter’s has a long and successful history of educating girls and boys, currently from the ages of 3 to 13, both day and boarding. We recognise that every child is unique and is inspired to learn in a different way. By offering a broad and challenging curriculum and a full programme of activities, each child is given the opportunity to develop to their full potential.  To achieve this goal, the staff and I are committed to building strong partnerships with parents right from the start – with all of us sharing the same ethos, an essential part of any school’s success.

Small class sizes ensure that the academic and pastoral needs of each child are met. As children progress through the school they are encouraged to learn and work independently. However, they can only achieve this once they have been given the tools and the self-belief. In a Christian community, where all relationships are based upon respect, your child will learn to appreciate the need to be courteous, considerate and use their common sense (our three Cs). This helps build the foundation for a happy and balanced life.  The St Peter’s experience aims to do just that, as we value the journey as much as the end result.  This is one of the reasons why parents choose to send their children to St Peter’s.

Having spent the majority of my teaching career in preparatory schools, which have been both co-educational and contained a boarding element, St Peter’s reflects all that I believe to be essential in providing your child with the very best start.  We hope that you will enjoy exploring St Peter’s potential through our website and we look forward to welcoming you to our school.

How the Children Learn

From the ages of 3-8 children are class taught by primary specialists, with additional expertise offered in Music, French, PE and Games.  At age 8 (Year 4), this is broadened to include Science and Design Technology.  Subject specialists teach all children from Year 5 onwards.  Drama and Music give scope for children of all ages to perform. They learn to combine their talents as a team, whether as actors, singers, musicians or technicians.

With a staff that offers expertise in a wide range of activities, our physical education and sports programme has an exciting mix to offer each child regardless of their ability. We believe that pupils should experience as many sports as possible and learn to appreciate the necessity to be sporting as well as competitive.  We value participation, team spirit and a will to win.

Admission

Whilst St Peter’s is not a selective school, all children go through an assessment upon entering. English and Maths assessments take place when the pupil visits the school on a familiarisation day. The VR and Non VR tests are not generally completed on this day, so that the child is not put under too much pressure and has a chance to experience some ‘routine’ lessons. This also gives class and subject teachers a chance to observe the behaviour and performance of the child under these conditions. The assessments can be completed once a pupil has joined the school.

The Learning Support Co-ordinator may also spend some time with all children wishing to enter Year 2 and above (and in exceptional cases below Year 2). During this time the LSC will assess the pupil’s reading age, spelling age and the pupil’s ability in a short piece of unguided writing. Other diagnostic testing may occur depending upon the information gained from a previous school, parent or from the form tutor.
