Welcome to Stuart Road Primary School

Stuart Road is a community school. We are proud of our long history since the school was founded in 1893.

Our site is in a quiet residential area within easy walking distance of the city centre.

Rooms are generously proportioned within our building, and, although our outdoor space is small, we have a garden and climbing frame in separate playground areas. We regularly use our local park for games – only 5 minutes walk away, and maintain strong links with our neighbouring Secondary schools – having access to many of their facilities. Stuart Road Out of School Club runs from within our building and offers child care provision through a breakfast, after school and holiday club.

We firmly believe in a co-operative approach to support the learning of our children – valuing the important role you, as parents and carers, have to play in making your child’s education as successful as possible. We look forward to working with you in partnership.

Awards

Stuart Road Friendly Association

All parents/carers and relatives are automatically members of the Association. The group was established with the intention of providing extras for the children. They also support the work of the teachers not only through fund-raising but also by providing practical help with school activities.

A very active core committee plan activities throughout the year. A popular event is the School Disco with DJ along with delicious refreshments and drinks. Many of these are themed events – Halloween, Valentine’s Disco, St Patrick’s…

Activities are wide and varied and include, for example a Book Exchange – when over 600 books are swapped for a nominal fee, to a formal presentation of a book for Year 6 leavers; Christmas/Summer Fayres; Carols at Christmas in the garden.

The group also act as a sounding board for Staff and Governors who consult parents for views concerning any proposed changes or plans for the future.

Fliers and posters keep you informed of meetings – please give your support, these events are only possible with your voluntary help.

Governors

The Governing Body

The Governing Body of Stuart Road School is comprised of a combination of appointed, elected and community Governors, listed below. The Governing Body is responsible along with the Headteacher for the general running of the school. The role of the Governors is to:

  • establish the aims and policies of the school, and how they should be carried out in order to maximise the overall standard of education.
  • help select new staff for the school.
  • support the Headteacher and the staff in the review and development of the school curriculum, including the teaching of the National Curriculum and Religious Education.
  • help decide how to spend the school’s budget and to ensure adequate monitoring of expenditure.
  • monitor the state of the school premises and equipment.
  • act as a link between the neighbourhood, the school and the City Council.
The Governors meet formally at least once a term with additional meetings in committees.

Parent Governors

If you are a parent or guardian of a child at Stuart Road School you can stand for election as Parent Governor. Please contact one of the Governors if you require further information. When vacancies occur the Headteacher will inform the Parents of the arrangements for the Parent Governor Elections. You may put forward your name or propose someone. If there are more nominations than vacancies all the parents of the school will be able to vote in a ‘secret ballot’. Once elected you can stay on the Governing Body for four years, even if your child leaves Stuart Road School during this period. After that you will need to stand down.
