Torquay Community College is situated in the seaside resort of Torquay. It is a non-selective school serving an area where there are schools that select by academic attainment. Throughout the rest of Torbay, there are three Grammar schools, a bi-lateral and a church-aided school. There are also comprehensive schools serving Paignton and Brixham.

The college is an average size, with approximately 1100 students aged 11-16 currently on roll. There are, however, surplus places at the college which, together with the employment patterns, results in a significantly high number of pupils who are admitted other than at the start of a school year: in 2000-2001, 115 pupils were in this category, approximately ten per cent of the roll; from September 2002 to July 2003, a total of 137 pupils had been admitted; and from September 2003 to July 2004, 110 pupils were admitted during the year.

The comprehensive values of entitlement and equal-valuing are implicit in all Torquay Community College’s work. We offer a wide range of courses and activities which ensure that individual potential is realised and self-esteem is enhanced. We believe that education is concerned with the whole person, the emotional as well as the intellectual, the spiritual as well as the academic and it is a process which should focus on knowledge and understanding whilst developing skills of team work, problem solving, and communication. We emphasise that education is a partnership; the partners being the students, the College, the parents and the community and that all must be committed to the partnership and ready to contribute so that the process gives maximum value to all involved.

All of our school age students study the full range of National Curriculum subjects at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. We also offer Vocational GCSEs in Business Studies, Travel and Tourism, and Health and Social Care. Over 95% of the students are entered for GCSEs and over 50% of our Year 11 leavers continue their education at other institutions.

We have a growing partnership with South Devon College and Dartington Tech to deliver vocationally based options embracing the 14-19 Agenda.

Torquay Community College has a well-established pastoral system of form tutors and heads of year, who play an important role in delivering and in supporting student learning.

Torquay Community College was removed from Special Measures in November 2001 and is now designated a School Facing Challenging Circumstances (SFCC) due to the selective system working in Torbay. Following an Ofsted Inspection in November 2003, the report stated that “The College is providing a satisfactory standard of education for its pupils and is now improving rapidly as a result of the hard work and dedication of the staff and teaching is good overall”.

The main buildings, standing in extensive grounds, date from 1938. There has been considerable additional building since then, some of a temporary nature. The College has recently had 12 classrooms extended and a Modern Languages block opened in September 1997. £1.4 million was awarded in Spring 1999 under New Deals for Schools which has provided a new Reception area, Library Learning Centre, 3 ICT Suites, a Dining Hall and Drama Studio. Further building work began in February 2005 to complete a Sports Hall by December 2005 followed by a Music Suite.

We became a Community College in 1997. As a Community College, we offer opportunities to people of all ages. The Adult and Community Learning Department is responsible for ensuring that the commitment to life-long learning embraces a wide range of academic, vocational and leisure activities. The College welcomes all members of the community to take advantage of the resources and facilities that are available through a growing programme of classes.

South Devon and the nearby Dartmoor National are areas of outstanding natural beauty. The cities of Exeter and Plymouth are easily reached and there are good rail and coach services to London.

Torquay Community College is committed to delivering excellence for all. We have a clear focus on teaching, learning and raising standards of achievement.
