Dear Parents

I am proud to introduce this Online Prospectus which is designed to give you the information you require about our school. I have been Headteacher of the school since 1990 and I have seen a continuous improvement in the achievements and successes of our pupils during that time. Our designation as a Specialist School for PE and Sport is very exciting.

I look forward to a big leap in our standards over the next few years as a result of the increased opportunities we can provide to motivate our pupils.

Of course, you can only really get to know a school by visiting during a working day and we provide opportunities throughout the year for this to happen. Our intention is to provide excellent teaching to foster the effective learning of all our children. I am pleased to say that we are becoming increasingly effective at this. Visitors will also find the school a purposeful and friendly place where relationships between staff and pupils are good. In this environment children are given a chance to grow and achieve success.

Kenilworth School and Sports College embraces its role as a comprehensive school serving the whole community. Our ex pupils are to be found in many diverse and successful roles, most having moved through further and higher education. Students regularly achieve excellent academic results, well above the national average, and the Castle Sixth Form Centre is very successful in providing the bridge to Higher Education.

I believe that the knowledge of individual pupils and a strong partnership with parents are vital ingredients for successful learning and we wish to encourage this from our very first contact.

If you wish to get to know the school better, please do not hesitate to ring for an appointment.

Yours sincerely

Dr. A. L. Begbie

Headmaster

Our Values

At Kenilworth School and Sports College:

  • The pupils will feel proud of their school and enjoy going to a place where their needs are taken seriously and they are well known as individuals
  • The pupils will work in a happy, ordered, but not regimented community where rules have reasons. They can work without interference and any problems they encounter are dealt with quickly and sensitively, and misdemeanours handled firmly, but justly.
  • The lessons are varied, interesting and challenge them at an appropriate level. Pupils are motivated to make progress and achieve well. If they are in difficulty they will get support. The relationships between pupils and teaching staff are warm but respectful and pupils have at least one adult who knows them very well.
  • There is a range of opportunities outside lessons to stimulate new interests and enthusiasms.
  • Praise and encouragement are frequently used and a broad scope of possible achievement is recognized. Where support is needed, it is as positive and individual as possible.
  • The school has the resources to sustain this varied and exciting curriculum and the environment is well cared for, stimulating and imaginative. The children are encouraged to take responsibility for the care of their surroundings.
  • All pupils have equal access to different aspects of the curriculum and are discouraged from harmful stereotypes. The school maintains an open view of their potential.
  • All pupils are encouraged to take responsibility and develop leadership skills through co-operative working. They are expected to show tolerance and respect for others’ opinions.
  • All pupils are given guidance and have information and expertise to help them in their vocational choices.

When the young people are ready to leave school:

  • They will have achieved the very best academic results they can. Other experiences, skills and talents will be formally recognized.
  • They will have a positive attitude to further study and training and some idea of the career path they wish to follow. They have the learning skills to make the best use of opportunities available.
  • They will be personable young adults, who could sustain themselves economically and are prepared to give up their time in the service of others.
  • They will have some idea of their beliefs and their spiritual and emotional needs. They will have developed a set of moral principles, and be able to sustain relationships.
  • They will have the motivation to play their part in society and the self-confidence to question and challenge when they feel it necessary.
  • They will have made good friends and have happy memories.

Sports College

Leading the way locally and nationally

Kenilworth School became a Specialist School in September 2002. For us, the largest school in the county, this represented a culmination of several years work and development which has seen a clear commitment to high quality Physical Education and Sport. We strongly believe that sport should include everyone and be a focal point and a motivator.

Specialist Sports College Status? What does this mean?

As a Sports College we aim to be a dynamic force in education, demonstrating how high quality P.E. and sport can make a distinctive contribution to whole school improvement, establishing successful partnerships between schools and the private/public/voluntary sectors and developing ways of working with the community, particularly our primary schools. We are extending the range of opportunities available to pupils and have a high level of commitment to creating a distinctive ethos and raising standards.

Whole School Impact

The impact of these programmes has already been felt across the school in other subject areas and by all students. We have continued to raise standards of achievements in P.E. and Sport and use this to enhance the academic, personal and social development of all our students.

We are working to increase their self esteem, imbue them with a sense of pride in their successes, encourage them to strive for improvement, motivate them to achieve more and so raise their standard of attainment in all areas of the curriculum.

Therefore, although the focus of our specialist status is sport, assistance has been given to support the high quality teaching and learning in all subject areas.

This Includes:

  • Projects reinforcing the recognition of student achievement
  • Collecting data for use in maths, science and technology
  • Assisting with developments using interactive digital technology
  • Developing and enhancing communication links throughout the school
  • Promoting health and well-being to enhance learning

Pastoral

The welfare, care and development of children in this large school is the responsibility of our tutors and Year Heads. As well as ensuring the social well-being of our pupils the pastoral system works with curriculum leaders, parents and pupils to ensure that pupils make good progress towards academic and personal targets.

  • Pupils start in Lower School in Year 7 and keep the same tutor and year head until the end of Year 9. Tutor groups are the main basis for teaching groups although there is some setting in Mathematics and Foreign Languages.
  • Pupils move to Upper School for Year 10 and 11 with a new tutor and Year Head. The tutor group may also change.
  • Post 16 pupils remain organized in tutor groups with a different tutor. There are two Senior Tutors at Castle and a Head of Sixth Form.

Tutors are the first point of contact for parents followed by Year Heads or Senior Tutors.
