Welcome
Mayfield is a co-educational preparatory school for children aged 2 1/2 - 11 years, located just outside the town of Walsall in the West Midlands.  The school is the junior member of The Queen Mary's Foundation which dates from 1554 and includes Queen Mary's Grammar School for boys and Queen Mary's High School for girls. Mayfield School dates from 1893 and has occupied its present site since 1926.

As a school, we are proud of our past and present and aim to continue to equip Mayfield children with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to meet the ever-increasing challenges of the new millenium.

School Ethos & Values

Values

The Governors and staff at Mayfield aim to:

- Encourage the development of self confidence, self esteem and consideration for others.
- Nurture spiritual awareness.
- Foster courtesy and self-discipline through well established routines and high expecations.
- Provide the security of a consistent, caring environment where individuality is valued and respected.
- Develop an awareness of the needs of others in the wider world.

Achievement

Mayfield aims to encourage and develop academic excellence by incorporating a thorough grounding of literacy and numeracy with the aquisition of skills of enquiry, study and application based on the framework of the National Curriculum.

There is an emphasis on traditional whole class teaching with specialist staff in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, DT, French, ICT, Music, PE, Games and Speech.

A high number of pupils regularly move to selective secondary schools, some with scholarship awarded. Levels at KS1 and KS2 are consistently well above the national average.

Quality Control

Mayfield is accredited by the Independent Schools Joint Council and the Head is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools. It is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate and by OFTED (Nursery and Reception only). Full reports are availalble for all present and prospective parents.

Admissions Procedure

Children are admitted into Pre-Nursery at the beginning of the Autumn Term (September) or the beginning of the Spring Term (January) at the age of 2+.  Attendance is offered on a flexible part-time/full day basis for the initial year although a small number of places may be made available for full time attendance.  Children then complete three further full time terms in the Nursery before moving into the Main School.

Following an initial enquiry, a child's name is entered on to the enquiry register and a letter sent to confirm this and advising that further contact will be made in the term the child reaches two years of age.  The Head will meet with the parents and child at this time and a place will be allotted if required.  Unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list if they wish.

Priority is given to siblings of children already in school.  Otherwise, no preference is given.

On the offer of a place, parents are requested to complete an application form and forward a registration fee of £100.00 (£25 of which is non refundable and £75 of which will be deducted from the first terms fees) in order to confirm the place.

Children for admission to Main School will be required to attend for a trial day during which English and Maths assessments will be made.  The day will be spent with children of the appropriate academic year.

A place will be offered subject to satisfactory performance in the assessments following a short interview with the Head.
