Wood Green High School is a thriving and vibrant Community. It is a rather unusual Comprehensive school because we are a Specialist Sports, Maths and Computing College as well as a “normal” school. This means that as well as doing the National Curriculum subjects, we also offer a huge range of sports activities – something to suit everyone’s taste and level of ability. We have a large Health and Fitness Suite, a superb Sports Hall with Indoor and Outdoor Cricket Nets, professional standard table tennis facilities as well as two gymnasia, extensive playing fields and the opportunity to try more unusual sports such as rock climbing and whitewater rafting, for example.

We have excellent ICT facilities, with whiteboards in all subjects and one computer for every two students, with equipment we can also loan out. All our teachers have Laptop Computers and are very proficient in the use of ICT. In Maths, we have developed many fun programmes to help everyone with their numeracy.

In 2007, our new teaching block, the Hughes Building, will open in the centre of our school. This will house the Sixth Form Centre, Maths, English and three new Science labs. It has been designed by the School Change Team to provide state of the art learning facilities.

Wood Green High School, College of Sport has an excellent reputation for the politeness of its pupils and the calm, well-disciplined way everyone approaches their studies. Smart school uniform, excellent attendance and punctuality, good homework habits and first class teaching are the expected standard at Wood Green. Last year we have had to disappoint over 400 young people who have not been able to gain a place here in September.

As having just started at Wood Green, I aim to enhance the high levels of achievement that Wood Green High School has made its trade mark. If you are prepared to work hard and join in everything that we have to offer, you too will look forward to coming to school. Then you will achieve those excellent examination results which everyone needs to get a good job – and, remember, at Wood Green you can stay on to the 6th form to study for a place at University, if you work hard.

We are all proud of belonging to the family of Wood Green High School College of Sport, Maths and Computing and it helps us to maintain those very high standards which has made us into one of the best comprehensive schools in the country.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Pank Patel
Headteacher

Welcome to Wood Green High School

FACILITIES FOR WORK AND PLAY

Wood Green High School is an oversubscribed, co-educational Comprehensive School and Specialist College of Sport for pupils aged 11 to 18 years. It is a 10 form entry with a yearly intake of some 250 pupils from local primary schools. In September 2004 there will be about 1450 pupils in the school of whom approximately 200 will be in the Sixth Form (Years 12/13) which attracts students from this and other secondary schools in the area. There are over 90 members of teaching staff.

HISTORY OF WOOD GREEN HIGH SCHOOL

The school was formed in 1968 by the amalgamation of Wednesbury Boy's High School (1924) and Wood Green County Secondary Modern School (1963). The original buildings have had extensive additions. The 1970's saw an Administration Block opened in 1971, containing a Library and Lecture Theatre, a practical wing with an Art Suite, Technology workshops and Textile room, and a Music Suite. More recently a Sixth Form Centre (years 12/13) and Computer Centres have been added. The Reading Room, funded by a generous donation from the Old Wodens - "old boys" of the school, was opened in 1993. Our long-awaited Sports Hall was built in 1995. New mobile classrooms were also provided to cater for the increasing number of pupils. These developments, together with modifications to the existing buildings to upgrade accommodation for Science, Food Technology and Drama mean that the school is well equipped in all departments. From September 1998 Wood Green High School became a specialist Sports College.
