WELCOME!!!

Dear Parent

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your family to Mosshead Primary School.  I hope that you will enjoy reading our handbook and will find it both interesting and helpful.  In it we have tried to paint a picture of life at Mosshead Primary School.

Mosshead Primary School is very much a part of the local community and everyone, pupils, staff, parents and friends have an important role to play in the life of our school.

We take great pride in creating within our school a very caring and concerned community for children, staff and parents where pupils study an appropriate and stimulating curriculum to help enable them to achieve their full potential.

I firmly believe that education is a partnership between school and home and that by working together we can ensure that our pupils' learning experience is of the highest quality.

In partnership with parents we work to encourage positive attitudes in our pupils, we foster values such as respect, fairness, honesty and caring.

We encourage our pupils to take responsibility and to develop an understanding of citizenship to enable them to become caring, considerate and responsible citizens (of both the community and the world).

I hope you will enjoy getting to know us better and I look forward to having you and your family join us here at Mosshead Primary School.

Yours sincerely

AILEEN WELSH

Head Teacher

School Aims

We aim to foster in our children values and attitudes which will serve them well throughout their whole lives as we firmly believe that the span of years between four and twelve is most formative and is filled with enthusiasm for living. This is achieved by encouraging and channelling energies into the development of a balanced and mature person, able to function on his or her own and with others, displaying social values of benefit to the child and to the community at large.

Within this section you will find detailed aims for the school and these reflect the ethos created by all staff and pupils in the school.

Curriculum

The 5 - 14 programme is a national structure which individual schools use as a basis for review of school policy and practice in all curricular areas from Primary 1 to Secondary 2. This is a long term programme which will enable curricular changes to be introduced
gradually.

We follow the principles for curriculum planning as laid down by East Dunbartonshire Council and in line with 5-14. This means that we offer a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum differentiated to meet the needs of every individual child. Teaching and learning are organised to allow a natural progression from one stage to another with children moving at their own individual pace.

Within this section you will find information about each area of the curriculum. In addition there is information relating to the school's approach to homework, national testing and pupil reporting.

Pupil Council

The Pupil Council is an important forum for all children in the school to use as a means to able to state their constructive views about school life.
Each year group has their own representative and these representatives meet regularly with members of the senior management team in order to discuss issues that have been identified by all children in the school.

The information in this section will give you details of membership of the Pupil Council and provide up to date information about the current activities that the Pupil Council is involved in.

Eco-School

Eco Schools is an international accredited award scheme designed to encourage whole school action for the environment. The Eco-schools process is holistic.  It works by involving the whole school – pupils, staff and parents as well as working with the local community.  It encourages team work and gives the children an opportunity to make decisions that affect their school and their future. Mosshead Eco-Committee meets once a month to discuss ideas and class projects.  Eco-Announcements are read out at weekly assemblies.  The Eco-Committee produces a newsletter three times a year to keep everyone informed of the progress we are making.
